  • The influence of climate and population structure on East Asian skeletal morphology

    Open Access•Elizabeth O Cho, L W Cowgill et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Evolution•2022•Cited by: 3•References: 94

  • Postmodern Medusa: The Monstrous-Feminine in StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm

    Open Access•Gregory E Blomquist, Gregory Blomquist•ARTICLE•Games and Culture•2021

This article explores the representation of monstrous-feminine agency through the character of Kerrigan in the StarCraft series with emphasis on StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm. Kerrigan’s subjectivity as a player-character complicates her in ways that require a different application of the monstrous-feminine from those characters from literature, film, and video games that position them as enemies to overcome. The article begins examining Kerri…

  • Unpacking the heritability of body mass index and other ratios

    Open Access•Gregory E Blomquist•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2019

Increasing adiposity likely decreases the phenotypic correlations more than the genetic correlation resulting in reduced heritability of the ratio. This contrasts with the commonly reported stability or increase of BMI heritability and implies it may result from increased genetic variance in weight in obesogenic environments. The bivariate model offers other advantages over ratios, including estimating the conditional genetic variance or heritabi…

  • Anthropometric heritability and child growth in a Caribbean village: A quantitative genetic analysis of longitudinal height, weight, and body mass index in Bwa Mawego, Dominica

    Open Access•Monica H Keith, Gregory E Blomquist et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2019•References: 56

Objectives Body size and composition vary widely among individuals and populations, and long‐term research in diverse contexts informs our understanding of genetic, cultural, and environmental impacts on this variation. We analyze longitudinal measures of height, weight, and body mass index (BMI) from a Caribbean village, estimating the extent to which these anthropometrics are shaped by genetic variance in a small‐scale population of mixed ances…

  • Multivariate Craniodental Allometry of Tarsiers

    Open Access•Rachel A Munds, Rachel H Dunn et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2018•References: 47

  • Modeling variation in early life mortality in the western lowland gorilla: Genetic, maternal and other effects

    Open Access•Monica H Ahsan, Gregory E Blomquist•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•2015

Uncovering sources of variation in gorilla infant mortality informs conservation and life history research efforts. The international studbook for the western lowland gorilla provides information on a sample of captive gorillas large enough for which to analyze genetic, maternal, and various other effects on early life mortality in this critically endangered species. We assess the importance of variables such as sex, maternal parity, paternal age…

  • Applying Quantitative Genetic Methods to Primate Social Behavior

    Open Access•Gregory E Blomquist, Lauren J N Brent•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2014•Cited by: 3•References: 72

  • Maternal Effects on Offspring Mortality in Rhesus Macaques ( Macaca mulatta )

    Open Access•Gregory E Blomquist•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•2013

The genetics of primate life histories are poorly understood, but quantitative genetic patterns in other mammals suggest phenotypic differences among individuals early in life can be strongly affected by interactions with mothers or other caretakers. I used generalized linear mixed model extensions of complex pedigree quantitative genetic techniques to explore regression coefficients and variance components for infant and juvenile mortality rates…

  • Rank-Related Fitness Differences and Their Demographic Pathways in Semi-Free-Ranging Rhesus Macaques (Macaca mulatta)

    Open Access•Gregory E Blomquist, Donald Stone Sade et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2011•Cited by: 2•References: 48

  • Selection on adult female body size in rhesus macaques

    Open Access•Gregory E Blomquist, Jean E Turnquist•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Evolution•2011•Cited by: 2•References: 68

  • Brief communication: Methods of sequence heterochrony for describing modular developmental changes in human evolution

    Open Access•Gregory E Blomquist•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2009•Cited by: 2•References: 44

Interest in the developmental changes leading to apomorphic features of human anatomy is longstanding. Although most research has focused on quantitative measures of size and shape, additional information may be available in the sequence of events in development, including aspects of phenotypic integration. I apply two recently proposed techniques for analyzing developmental sequences to literature data on human and chimpanzee age of limb element…
