  • Exchange rate undervaluation and African surges

Open Access•Camille da Piedade, Luc Jacolin et al.•ARTICLE•World Economy•2025

We study the role of undervaluation of currency exchange rates in triggering African product export surges. Over the period 1995–2017, 96 episodes are identified for 41 African countries from a basket of their primary and manufactured exported goods (149 products, 4‐digit HS code). We compute country‐product specific real exchange rate misalignments, that allow testing the hypothesis that undervaluation drives competitiveness and thus export surg…

  • Textile Manufacturing in Eight Developing Countries

Mohamed E Chaffai, Mohamed Chaffai et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Development Studies•2012

Production frontiers with technical inefficiency determinants are estimated using stochastic models for textile manufacturing in eight developing countries encompassing about 800 firms. Inefficiency determinants are considered either on an individual basis, or in the form of composite indicators reflecting in-house or managerial factors and various dimensions of the external environment. Although each of these two categories of factors is statist…

    Gaoussou Diarra, Patrick Plane•ARTICLE•Mondes en développement•2012•Cited by: 3•References: 29

  • Technical efficiency measurement within the manufacturing sector in Côte d'Ivoire

Karine Chapelle, Patrick Plane•ARTICLE•The Journal of Development Studies•2005

This article analyses the productive performance in four manufacturing sectors of the Ivorian economy: textiles and garments, metal products, food processing, wood and furniture. To appraise the productive performance, econometric production frontier models are estimated, illustrating the maximum output attainable from a given quantity of inputs. The frontier and firm efficiency scores are derived from stochastic production functions estimated on…

    Patrick Plane•ARTICLE•Canadian Journal of Development…•2002•Cited by: 2

Throughout the world, deep reforms are being implemented in telecommunications networks. Sub-Saharan African countries are not immune to the dispute over the way the sector has been managed to date, dominated as it was by a technological stability and bilateral institutional arrangements between public monopolies. The factors structuring the new landscape of the African telecommunication networks lead to partial privatization of the national incu…

  • Transport public et transport privè à Dakar

    Patrick Plane•ARTICLE•Canadian Journal of Development…•1996

In Dakar, the demand for urban transport is met by a public corporation (SOTRAC) and numerous operators from the informal sector who own small vans. At the beginning of the 1980s an important change took place in the pricing policy. The SOTRAC was allowed to increase the fares in order to transfer its excessive costs to customers, therefore reducing the operating deficit. By cross-subsidizing the loss-making activities, low fares were maintained …

This paper outlines the modalities of the recovery process and its economic consequences for jive Senegalese public utilities (water, electricity, post-office, railway and urban transportation). The analysis of the economic consequences of the reform shows that public utilities, although theoretically in a monopoly situation, had to face acute competition. At the macroeconomic level, public utilities proved to contribute only slighty to fiscal st…
