Projected alcohol demand in college students with heavy drinking
Measures of the relative reinforcing value of alcohol (i.e., alcohol demand ) are associated with concurrent and future rates of alcohol use. Given that college‐age young adults may fail to predict escalation of substance use, the present project explores the novel construct of projected future demand by college students who engage in heavy drinking and whether it can predict future alcohol use. During an initial session, participants completed a…
Residential Building Codes Do Save Energy
In 1978, California adopted building codes designed to reduce the energy used for temperature control. Using a rich data set of hourly electricity consumption for 158,112 houses in Sacramento, we estimate that the average house built just after 1978 uses 8% to 13% less electricity for cooling than a similar house built just before 1978. Comparing the estimated savings to the policy's projected cost, our results suggest the policy passes a cost-be…

The Examination of Change Management Using Qualitative Methods
Despite the number of theories explaining the nature and antecedents of change, there is no consensus on a universally applicable model. Competing theories have been tested using deductive methods focusing on hypothesis testing. This study has utilized qualitative methods for collecting data within the sport industry to provide an initial understanding of change within that case industry Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 29 sport man…
Capital building through gym work
This research employed Pierre Bourdieu’s model of capital accumulation to frame the benefits conferred by gym use. Thirteen participants from four gyms in Melbourne, Australia, were purposefully selected for in-depth interviews, where detailed case histories were solicited, and data were analysed using a narrative coding model. Results indicated that the two most highly valued forms of capital were bodily capital and psychological capital. All 13…
Estimating the Market Effect of a Food Scare
In 2000, a genetically modified corn variety called StarLink that was not approved for human consumption was discovered in the food-corn supply. To estimate the price impact of this event on the U.S. corn market, we develop the relative price of a substitute method. This method applies not only to the StarLink event but also to rare events in other markets. We find that the contamination led to a 6.8% discount in corn prices and that the suppress…
Level Shifts and the Illusion of Long Memory in Economic Time Series
When applied to time series processes containing occasional level shifts, the log-periodogram (GPH) estimator often erroneously finds long memory. For a stationary short-memory process with a slowly varying level, I show that the GPH estimator is substantially biased, and derive an approximation to this bias. The asymptotic bias lies on the (0, 1) interval, and its exact value depends on the ratio of the expected number of level shifts to a user-…

Beyond Number Crunching
Valid and reliable research is pivotal to successful sport marketing strategy. Market research may be gathered via either quantitative or qualitative means. This paper explores the theoretical background and practical applications of qualitative research techniques. It explains the appropriate context for qualitative approaches, and discusses sampling procedures with particular emphasis on the powerful but simple technique known as theoretical sa…

The Special Features of Sport
While most sport administrators acknowledge the advantages of managing sport organisations as businesses, or at least the need to use good management practices, they are frequently unaware of the features that distinguish sport from other forms of business (Smith, 1998). This paper aims to review these distinct features which make sport a special enterprise. These features include an intense emotional relationship between members, fans and their …
Improvement Scaling (Rehabilitation Version)
OBJECTIVES: Accurate measurement of clinically relevant change in individual patients undergoing rehabilitation has been an elusive goal. Simple, clinically meaningful, patient-centered measures of individual patient change are urgently needed. The purpose of this research was the development and testing of Improvement Scaling (Rehabilitation Version)(IMS), a new approach to measuring the progress that rehabilitation patients make during treatmen…
Family mediation of stress
Coping with the stress imposed by a severe illness is more than an individual function. The role of the family is vital and can make the difference between effective and ineffective coping
