  • Migration Age Profiles for Local Authority Areas in England, 1971-1981

    Open Access•J Bates, James E Bates et al.•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning A…•1987•Cited by: 2•References: 3

This paper is a report on continuing research on the application of age profiles in migration analysis. In particular, it is an update of previous work published in this journal with an analysis of 1981 Census data for local authority areas in England. The changes in migration patterns over the intercensal period from 1971 to 1981 are described

  • Analysis of Gross Migration Profiles in England and Wales

    Open Access•Ian Bracken, J Bates et al.•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning A…•1983•Cited by: 7•References: 17

In this paper we describe the development and application of two approaches to the analysis of age and sex specific interarea migration. The data relate to local authority areas in England and Wales. These approaches are developments of established migration profile-fitting and cluster analytic methods. The paper shows how these methods have been used to develop complementary classifications from which potentially valuable criteria for migration …

  • Estimation of Migration Profiles in England and Wales

    Open Access•J Bates, James E Bates et al.•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning A…•1982•Cited by: 9•References: 3

Migration profiles by age have been increasingly used in the analysis of migration data, and a theoretical function has been developed by researchers at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA). This paper refines the approach by applying the principles of maximum likelihood to the estimation of the coefficients for the function. This enhances the statistical basis and in particular enables us to carry out tests of similar…

  • A Model for the Science of Decision

    Open Access•James Bates, James E Bates•ARTICLE•Philosophy of Science•1954•References: 5

This paper attempts to present a formal model for the science of decision where “science of decision” is restricted to the work that has been done in formal models and not those aspects connected with the gathering of empirical data and development of measures for the data. One of the difficulties in treating such a phenomenon as decision-making has been to give a precise statement of the problem. The literature of numerous fields is filled with …
