  • Neighborhood Blight, Stress, and Health

Eugenia C South, Michelle C Kondo et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2015•Cited by: 13•References: 29

We measured dynamic stress responses using ambulatory heart rate monitoring as participants in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania walked past vacant lots before and after a greening remediation treatment of randomly selected lots. Being in view of a greened vacant lot decreased heart rate significantly more than did being in view of a nongreened vacant lot or not in view of any vacant lot. Remediating neighborhood blight may reduce stress and improve hea…

  • A Difference-in-Differences Analysis of Health, Safety, and Greening Vacant Urban Space

Charles C Branas, Rose A Cheney et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Epidemiology•2011

Greening of vacant urban land may affect health and safety. The authors conducted a decade-long difference-in-differences analysis of the impact of a vacant lot greening program in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on health and safety outcomes. "Before" and "after" outcome differences among treated vacant lots were compared with matched groups of control vacant lots that were eligible but did not receive treatment. Control lots from 2 eligibility pool…

  • Seasonal Aspects of Infant and Childhood Mortality

    Rose A Cheney•ARTICLE•The Journal of Interdisciplinary…•1984•Cited by: 7

One of the most striking features of early childhood mortality during the last half of the nineteenth century was a seasonal pattern dominated by summer diarrheal disease. Seasonal ratios were used for Philadelphia to identify three different stages in the decline of diarrheal mortality for infants and one year olds. These stages were differentiated both by the speed of the decline and the ages affected. The age differential in the timing of thes…

  • Mortality Trends in Philadelphia

    Open Access•Gretchen A Condran, Rose A Cheney et al.•ARTICLE•Demography•1982•Cited by: 13•References: 14

This article examines the decline in mortality which occurred in Philadelphia in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Age- and cause-specific mortality rates accounting for the decline are isolated and the relative importance of several variables in explaining the reduction of overall mortality levels is assessed. By using small areas within the city we are able to establish the impact of particular innovations on specific causes of…
