Parthian and Elymaean Rock Reliefs
This chapter presents a survey of rock reliefs from the Arsacid period. The principle examples include Bisotun, Sar-e Pol-e Zohab, Tang-e Sarvak, Hung-e Azhdar, and Tang-e Butan. The reliefs are described, their iconography is discussed, and their chronology is outlined. Details of dress and weaponry are stressed. With a few exceptions, most of the reliefs are anepigraphic, and therefore attributing them to a particular ruler is problematic. Some…

Archaeological Evidence for Textiles in Pre‐Islamic Iran
The production of textiles began very early in the Near East, even before the development of settled villages and the domestication of plants and animals in the Neolithic Period (New Stone Age, the 7th and 6th millennia B.C.). Greek Art and Persian Taste: Some Animal Sculptures from Persepolis
The military and political interaction between ancient Greece and Persia was accompanied by artistic exchanges that are only now being unraveled. In addition to the Greek architects and artisans recorded at Susa, Persepolis and Pasargadae, we now know that Greek, or Greek-trained, sculptors worked at Persepolis. They produced freestanding, life-sized statues of dogs, bulls, and goats that functioned as traditional Near Eastern guardian figures. T…
