Agricultural Transformation and Farmers' Expectations
This paper uses the randomized rollout of a national agricultural extension program in Uganda to study subsistence smallholders' decisions to adopt cash oilseed crops and shift to commercial farming. By eliciting yield and price expectations, we examine how beliefs evolve after the intervention and influence adoption decisions. Our findings indicate that technical and market information significantly raises farmers' expectations, leading to an av…
Drinking Tea with the Neighbors
There has been scant empirical evidence linking associational membership to general trust and trustworthiness. This study explores urban youth clubs in Mali and asks: is membership in these groups associated with greater trust and trustworthiness toward society? It leverages 18 months of fieldwork, including 375 group surveys, 2,525 individual surveys, over 1,300 trust games, and transcripts from 66 focus groups. We use propensity score matching …
Can hypothetical measures of time preference predict actual and incentivised behaviour? Evidence from Senegal
Time preferences are an important determinant of decision-making and are widely measured through hypothetical survey questions. However, the extent to which they offer a good representation of time discounting remains largely unexplored. This paper estimates time preference parameters using a commonly-applied hypothetical elicitation method. We explore whether our estimated parameters correlate with actual and incentivized behaviours related to t…

Junior Farmer Field Schools, Agricultural Knowledge and Spillover Effects
We analyse the impact of a junior farmer field school project in Northern Uganda on students’ agricultural knowledge and practices. We also test for the presence of intergenerational learning spillover within households. We use differences-in-differences estimators with ex-ante matching and find evidence that the programme had positive effects on students’ agricultural knowledge and adoption of good practices. The project also produced spillover …

Households’ Willingness to Pay for Health Microinsurance and its Impact on Actual Take-up
Community-based health insurance schemes (CBHIS) have been present in the region of Theis, Senegal, for many years. Yet, despite the benefits they offer, take-up rates remain low. This article measures the willingness to pay (WTP) for CBHIS premiums in such a context; our results highlight the role of income, wealth and risk preferences as determinants of WTP. We also provide an analysis of the predictive power of WTP on the actual take-up of ins…
Methodological questions for the post-2015 development agenda
In 2015, the Millennium Development Goals are due to end. Academics, practitioners and the general public are eager to see which development agenda will take their place and a variety of different organizations are currently elaborating proposals for the next “round” of goals and targets. Instead of investigating possible topics of the upcoming agenda, we focus on methodological questions that – according to our view – will play a major role in t…
Gaps in social protection for health care and long‐term care in E urope
While public expenditure on health care and long‐term care ( LTC ) has been monitored for many years in E uropean countries, far less attention has been paid to the financial consequences for older people of private out‐of‐pocket ( OOP ) expenditure necessary to access such care. Employing representative cross‐sectional data on the elderly populations of 11 E uropean countries in 2004 from the S urvey of H ealth, Ageing and Retirement in E urope …
