Acculturation and Diabetes Risk in the Mexican American Mano a Mano Cohort
Objectives. To investigate the association between acculturation and diabetes risk in the Mexican American Mano a Mano (hand to hand) Cohort. Methods. We recruited 15 975 men and women in the Houston, Texas, area from 2001 to 2014. We used language use, birth country, and duration of US residence (among Mexico-born) to assess acculturation. Participants self-reported a physician’s diagnosis of diabetes during annual follow-up over an average of 5…
Cholelithiasis and the risk of liver cancer
BACKGROUND: Cholelithiasis and cholecystectomy have been proposed as risk factors for liver cancer, but findings have been inconsistent. We assessed this association using data from the Shanghai Women's and Men's Health Studies. METHODS: History of cholelithiasis and cholecystectomy were reported at baseline and follow-up interviews, and liver cancer diagnoses were ascertained from the Shanghai Cancer Registry and Vital Statistics Unit. Adjusted …
Does increased detection account for the rising incidence of breast cancer
BACKGROUND: The incidence of breast cancer has been increasing over time in the United States. METHODS: To determine the role of screening in this increase, trends in the incidence of in situ and invasive carcinoma of the breast were evaluated using records of the metropolitan Atlanta SEER program between 1979 and 1986. From a sample of records, evidence of symptoms and mammographic screening prior to diagnosis was recorded. RESULTS: The average …
A comparison of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome and Kaposi's sarcoma incidence rates, Atlanta, 1983-86
Recent temporal trends in incidence rates for acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and Kaposi's sarcoma were compared in metropolitan Atlanta, Georgia. From 1983 through 1986 the age-adjusted incidence rate of Kaposi's sarcoma among White males ages 25-49 increased 11-fold (2.2-24.4/100,000 person years). The annual incidence rate of AIDS increased ten-fold (11.3-113.3/100,000). These findings do not support earlier reports that the proporti…

Decline in the incidence of carcinoma in situ of the cervix
Temporal trends in the incidence of carcinoma in situ of the uterine cervix were evaluated in metropolitan Atlanta between 1975 and 1983. The average annual age-adjusted incidence rates per 100,000 women decreased from 61.5 in 1975-77 to 40.1 in 1981-83 for Whites and from 118.3 to 51.8 for Blacks during the same time periods. The relative declines were uniform across all age groups and exceeded the corresponding reductions in the incidence of in…
IUD Use and Subsequent Tubal Ectopic Pregnancy
As part of a case-control study of tubal ectopic pregnancy (TEP), we sought to evaluate the possible etiologic role of use of an intrauterine device (IUD) prior to conception. We interviewed 155 women who had a tubal ectopic pregnancy treated at one of five Seattle, Washington hospitals between 1975-79 regarding their reproductive, contraceptive, and medical histories; 456 women who delivered a baby in King County during the same period were iden…
