The longitudinal relations between mental state talk and theory of mind
We conclude that the parental ability to capture the thoughts, beliefs, and knowledge present in different scenarios is associated with children's ability to understand other minds. Moreover, parents' way of talking about the mental states of others is associated with their children's ability to understand and further develop ToM
Language access and theory of mind reasoning: Evidence from deaf children in bilingual and oralist environments
This investigation examined whether access to sign language as a medium for instruction influences theory of mind (ToM) reasoning in deaf children with similar home language environments. Experiment 1 involved 97 deaf Italian children ages 4-12 years: 56 were from deaf families and had LIS (Italian Sign Language) as their native language, and 41 had acquired LIS as late signers following contact with signers outside their hearing families. Childr…
Preschool Children's Mastery of the Form/Content Distinction in Communicative Tasks
The cognitive profile in infantile autism—A study of 70 children and adolescents using the Griffiths Mental Development Scale
Seventy children and adolescents with infantile autism were tested with the Griffiths Mental Development Scale II. A characteristic profile emerged with peaks in motor and visuo‐spatial domains and troughs in verbal and practical reasoning areas. These results support conclusions from previous research using other cognitive tests
Memory for conversations∗
A growing amount of research has given evidence which indicates that memory for surface structure characteristics of naturally produced verbal discourse can be quite substantial. This is not in agreement with the idea that it is only the conceptual meaning or gist of a verbal message that is stored. Research that has given evidence in favor of the latter contention has not used a naturally produced discourse. Instead, subjects have usually been i…

The Mediation of Attitudes by Speech in Dyadic Conversations
In this study, the relationships among personality characteristics, speech characteristics, and evaluative attitudes were investigated in dyadic conversations between peers. In previous research, it has been proposed that long utterances from a speaker in a conversation is perceived by the listener as expressing a positive attitude. Furthermore, a positive relationship between cognitive variables and utterance length has been found. While the lat…
