This chapter focuses on 1580–1640 as a period of crucial experimentation with intercultural alliances. It argues that Indians and Europeans laid the groundwork for some of the most important intercultural relationships before 1640. This chapter examines the kinds of partnerships diaspora Africans made in early 17th-century colonies. It focuses particularly on New Netherland and on Manhattan, which had the largest African community in North America before the 1650s. Using a close analysis of evidence from two criminal court cases, the chapter argues that Africans in New Amsterdam formed their own alliances and used them to challenge and sometimes to shape the power of Dutch …
