  • Honourable murder

    Steven C Hughes, S Hughes•ARTICLE•Journal of Modern Italian Studies•2020•References: 1

Acclaimed for its progressive approach, the Zanardelli code of 1889 eliminated the death penalty, legalized strikes, and referenced reformation over retribution with regard to criminals. Paradoxically, however, Zanardelli’s code also ‘liberalized’ the parameters of ‘honour killing’ or delitto d’onore which allowed greatly reduced penalties for those who killed (primarily) female family members surprised in flagrant adultery or intercourse. Despit…

  • Honor and crisis

    Steven C Hughes, S Hughes•ARTICLE•Journal of Modern Italian Studies•2016•Cited by: 1

The author postulates the use of chivalric language and tropes as part of the interventionist rhetoric that helped bring Italy into the First World War. Despite obvious affinities between the culture of dueling and the ‘virile assumptions’ of the interventionists, including their own participation in many duels, a review of the three major interventionist newspapers reveals the presence of surprisingly little chivalric language (sfida, vertenza, …

    Steven C Hughes, S Hughes•ARTICLE•Journal of Modern Italian Studies•2015

  • Duelling after the Duce

    Steven C Hughes, S Hughes•ARTICLE•Journal of Modern Italian Studies•2013•References: 2

Unlike other western European countries, Italy did not see the waning of the duel of honour after the First World War. On the contrary, there was an increase in the practice during the 1920s as the Fascists used mechanisms of honour to facilitate and legitimize their rise to power. However, Mussolini's regime found the individualism of the chivalric tradition inconsistent with its totalitarian notions of discipline and duty and worked in a variet…

  • The limits of cultural nationalism

    Open Access•Hughe, Steven C Hughes et al.•ARTICLE•Nations and Nationalism•2012•References: 7

This article critiques the ‘cultural turn’ in Italian Risorgimento historiography by examining Italian Switzerland, and specifically Ticino. This area paradoxically aided and abetted Italian patriots, especially Giuseppe Mazzini, yet rejected becoming part of the Italian national project. This paradox is heightened by the fact that the vast majority of the Italian nationalist literary canon, as identified by Alberto Maria Banti, was republished i…

This 1994 book provides a meticulous examination of the ideology, structure, and functions of papal police as they operated in the city and province of Bologna in the period before Italian unity. In doing so, it also offers an important new perspective on the Risorgimento in the region. The author argues that after the Restoration the papal government maintained much of Napoleon's police apparatus in order to enhance its absolute power as an admi…
