  • Allocating the Cost of Town Walls in Medieval Castile

    Jeffrey L Callen•ARTICLE•Accounting Historians Journal•2025

This study analyzes the normative criteria proposed by Rabbi Meir Halevi Abulafia (Ramah) for allocating the cost of building urban fortifications among Jewish aljamas in medieval Castile. Using textual and historical-interpretive analyses of rabbinic sources, this paper maintains that Ramah’s extensive cost allocation analysis of town walls was driven by historical events surrounding the Reconquista. The paper finds that Ramah’s geometric cost a…

  • Advanced Manufacturing Technologies

    Open Access•Kashi R Balachandran, Jeffrey L Callen•CHAPTER•Wiley Encyclopedia of Management•2015

Milgrom and Roberts argue that modern manufacturing practices are mutually complementary and their adoption is a profit‐maximizing response on the part of firms.

  • Product Cost Determination

    Open Access•Kashi R Balachandran, Jeffrey L Callen•CHAPTER•Wiley Encyclopedia of Management•2015

Allocation of costs of a commonly used service center by several jobs is an important aspect of determining product costs. Jobs that access a common service center cause delay to other jobs and this is captured in this article for developing a theoretically correct opportunity cost approach to cost allocation. The approach is used to determine the benefit obtained from setting up a capacity for the center to help in the determination of whether t…

  • The Transfer of Intangible Assets and Intangible Rights

Jeffrey L Callen•ARTICLE•Oxford Journal of Law and Religion•2015

This study explores how legal institutions have the potential to change economic development outcomes. Talmudic law ostensibly precludes the transfer (sale) of intangible assets and intangible rights thereby limiting an agricultural society’s ability to hedge risks and to raise financing. We argue that the Talmud itself found a fairly reasonable ‘rental contract’ solution for enabling the transfer of intangible assets. We further maintain that th…

  • The Contextual Impact of Nonprofit Board Composition and Structure on Organizational Performance

    Open Access•Jeffrey L Callen, April Klein et al.•ARTICLE•Voluntas Revista Internacional de…•2009•Cited by: 15•References: 5

We study the relation between stability of the nonprofit organization’s environment and its board structure and the impact of this relation on organizational performance from the perspectives of both Agency Theory and Resource Dependence (Boundary Spanning) Theory. The impact of board characteristics on organizational performance is contextual. Specifically, we predict and show for a sample of U.S. nonprofits that board mechanisms related to moni…

  • Differential Asset Valuation in the Medieval Post-Talmudic Legal Literature

    Jeffrey L Callen•ARTICLE•History of Political Economy•2008•References: 4

This study evaluates the extent to which the asset valuation arguments raised by medieval post-Talmudic legal scholars are consistent with modern contingent claims analysis. In particular, this study evaluates the arguments proposed by these scholars in order to rationalize the Talmud's differential valuation of the same asset by multiple claimants. Modern contingent claims analysis is able to explain differential valuation by invoking market imp…

  • The Coase Theorem and Coalitional Stability

Varouj A Aivazian, Jeffrey L Callen et al.•ARTICLE•Economica•1987•Cited by: 1

It is the contention of this paper that the Coase theorem has yet to be formulated and proved in a rigorou s manner. The paper addresses the problem of strategic coalitional be havior when more than two agents are involved in the externality. It is shown that there are examples for which nonefficient allocations a re stable in the sense of Aumann-Maschler bargaining sets, thereby vi tiating the Coase theorem. Hence a proper formulation of the Coa…

  • Foreign-Exchange Rate Dynamics

Jeffrey L Callen, Clarence C Y Kwan et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Business and Economic…•1985

This study examines whether foreign-exchange rates evolve as a random walk by directly comparing the predictive ability of autoregressive (AR) models of spot rates with that of the random walk. To reduce the influence of model specifications on test results, we neither specify the order of the AR process a priori nor assume that the order is necessarily the same over the entire sample period. For each subperiod, the AR model is estimated by maxim…
