Religious Affiliation and Military Service in the United States
Those who serve in the armed forces are shaped not only by incentives and opportunity structures but also by institutions that cultivate norms of duty, authority, and collective obligation. This study argues that religious institutions function as such socializing agents and play a measurable role in military enlistment in the United States. Complementing existing research that focuses on denomination or belief as key indicators, we introduce an …
Farewell to Faith: Democracy, the Decline in American Public Religion, and the Rise of the Non-Religious
The United States national identity is changing as the non-religious population is growing and fewer Americans follow traditional Christian faiths. When Alexis De Tocqueville visited the United States, he found that the national government gained legitimacy and support from the popular national religion. This faith was nominally Christian but lacked any meaningful theological content. The national creed was a simple monotheism that was supported …
“The Imagining of Possibilities”: Writers as Activists
Dhlomo, Rolfes Robert Reginald: An African Tragedy
Sepamla, Sipho
In den 1970er Jahren Anhänger der ‚Black Consciousness-Bewegung‘; Redakteur der Theaterzeitschrift S'ketsh und des Literaturmagazins New Classic; Gedichtbände und Romane; gründet 1978 die Federated Union of Black Artists (FUBA) in Johannesburg; nach der Beendigung der Apartheid veröffentlicht er 1996 den Roman Rainbow Journey (Regenbogen Reise).
Mofolo, Thomas Mokopu: Chaka
Mphahlele, Es'kia: The Wanderers
Mofolo, Thomas Mokopu: Moeti oa bochabela
The advent of a genre: Crime fiction and the state of the nation in South Africa
This article focuses on how South African crime fiction reflects and critiques the state of the nation. It recapitulates the history of the genre under apartheid, referring particularly to Wessel Ebersohn and James McClure, before reviewing its subsequent development, which is characterized in part by a concern to embrace the social and political problems of post-apartheid society. Taking account of crime statistics, and of the ambivalence some w…

Towards a Transcultural Future: Literature and Human Rights in a ‘Post’-Colonial World
Studying postcolonial literatures in English can (and indeed should) make a human rights activist of the reader – there is, after all, any amount of evidence to show the injustices and inhumanity thrown up by processes of decolonization and the struggle with past legacies and present corruptions. Yet the human-rights aspect of postcolonial literary studies has been somewhat marginalized by scholars preoccupied with more fashionable questions of t…

Voices of Justice and Reason: Apartheid and Beyond in South African Literature
Over the past fifty years transformations of great moment have taken place in South Africa. Apartheid and the subsequent transition to a democratic, non-racial society in particular have exercised a profound effect on the practice of literature. This study traces the development of literature under apartheid, then seeks to identify the ways in which writers and theatre practitioners are now facing the challenges of a new social order. The main fo…
