Changes in workplace car parking and commute mode
BACKGROUND: The use of private motor vehicles places a considerable burden on public health. Changes in workplace car parking policies may be effective in shifting behaviour. We use a natural experimental design to assess whether changes in policy were associated with differences in commute mode. METHODS: We used cohort data from participants working in Cambridge (2009-2012). Commuters reported their trips and travel modes to work over the last w…
Explanatory factors for health inequalities across different ethnic and gender groups
BACKGROUND: The objective of this study was to examine the relative contribution of factors explaining ethnic health inequalities (EHI) in poor self-reported health (pSRH) and limiting long-standing illness (LLI) between Health Survey for England (HSE) participants. METHOD: Using HSE 2003-2006 data, the odds of reporting pSRH or of LLI in 8573 Bangladeshi, Black African, Black Caribbean, Chinese, Indian, Irish and Pakistani participants was compa…
Association Between Alcohol Calorie Intake and Overweight and Obesity in English Adults
We investigated the contribution of alcohol-derived calories to the alcohol–obesity relation. Adult alcohol calorie intake was derived from consumption volume and drink type in the Health Survey for England 2006 (n = 8864). We calculated the odds of obesity with survey-adjusted logistic regression. Mean alcohol calorie consumption was 27% of the recommended daily calorie intake in men and 19% in women on the heaviest drinking day in the last week…
OP84 Explaining Ethnic Inequalities in Health
Background Although ethnic health inequalities remain a worldwide problem, underlying factors remain contested. Theories include genetic differences, culturally-patterned behavioural disparities, disadvantageous environmental exposures, and discrimination – as a psychosocial stressor and barrier to community and remunerative resources. A conceptual model was designed to explore the association between such factors and ethnic inequalities in self-…
PP13 The Association between Alcohol Calorie Intake and Overweight and Obesity in English Adults
Background Epidemiological research suggests that alcohol consumption may represent a sizable risk factor for weight gain, though precise causal mechanisms remain unclear and associations inconsistent. Studies focussed on alcohol units have shown linear and J-shaped relationships, with low intensity alcohol consumption associated with lower levels of obesity. The strength of the alcohol-weight relationship has typically been strongest among men. …
PS51 Could More Than Three Million Older People Be At Risk Of Alcohol-Related Harm? A Cross-Sectional Analysis Of Age-Specific Drinking Guidelines
Background To determine the effect of recently proposed age-specific alcohol consumption guidelines upon the estimated proportion and number of older individuals potentially at risk of alcohol-related harm. Nationally representative cross-sectional population data from Health Survey for England (HSE). Methods Random sample of the general population living in private households in England. For reliable comparison of adult alcohol consumption by ag…
