  • IX.— The Painted Ceiling in the Nave of Peterborough Cathedral

    Open Access•C J P Cave, Tancred Borenius•ARTICLE•Archaeologia•1938

The roof of the nave of Peterborough Cathedral (pl. xc) was erected in the latter years of the twelfth century and the ceiling was probably painted about 1220. It has frequently been stated that the ceiling was raised when the tower arch was changed from round to pointed, but there is no documentary evidence for this. If the original ceiling had been flat it would have had to have been widened by about 1 ft. 6 in. at each side to bring it to its …

  • Materials in England for the History of Italian Painting

    Tancred Borenius•ARTICLE•Italian Studies•1937

The connection which, in the field of art, for many centuries has existed between England and Italy, could be made the subject of lengthy and very fruitful enquiry. On the present occasion, it canbe only briefly sketched, mainly as a basis for some suggestions as to the possibilities which England to-day offers to the student of the history of Italian painting who wishes to turn his attention to material hitherto insufficiently known and apprecia…

  • Medieval Paintings from Castle Acre Priory

    Open Access•Tancred Borenius•ARTICLE•The Antiquaries Journal•1937

There is no need for me here to stress the extraordinary scarcity of surviving panel pictures of undoubted English origin dating from the fourteenth century, in spite of the fact that at the time they must have been produced in enormous quantities. All the greater is, in consequence, the importance which attaches to the notable examples which I have the honour of exhibiting and commenting upon to-night; and that I am able to do so is due, in the …

  • Clarendon Palace

    Open Access•Tancred Borenius, John Charlton•ARTICLE•The Antiquaries Journal•1936•Citada por: 3•Referências: 3

Every schoolboy knows the name of Clarendon in connexion with the Constitutions of Clarendon 1164; but as regards the importance, historically as well as archaeologically, of Clarendon Palace, as regards its gradual growth to great splendour and magnificence in Plantagenet days, and as regards its subsequent vicissitudes—on all these points I think it may be said without exaggeration that the world at large knows next to nothing; nor have such in…

  • VIII.— Some Further Aspects of the Iconography of St. Thomas of Canterbury

    Open Access•Tancred Borenius•ARTICLE•Archaeologia•1933

In addressing you, as I have the honour to do to-night, for the third time in four years, on the subject of the iconography of St. Thomas Becket, I am fully conscious of the risk I am running of becoming repetitious; but I venture to hope that, when you have heard what I have to say, you will agree that the new material which I am privileged to lay before you is of a nature which justifies my claiming your attention once more in this connexion

  • Rome in the Writings of Cardinal Wiseman

    Open Access•Tancred Borenius•ARTICLE•Blackfriars•1933

A great and peculiarly many-sided historic character like that of Cardinal Wiseman must always offer a number of angles of approach to the student. Speaking more particularly of his literary work, the power of retaining after death the art of making friends (to use the phrase of Hazlitt) is one which Wiseman may be said to have possessed in an exceptional degree. As a constant and ever-appreciative reader of Wiseman-nowadays, I venture to think, …

  • The Murderers of St. Thomas Becket in Popular Tradition

    Tancred Borenius•ARTICLE•Folklore•1932

  • A Destroyed Cycle of Wall-Paintings in a Church in Wiltshire

    Open Access•Tancred Borenius•ARTICLE•The Antiquaries Journal•1932•Citada por: 2•Referências: 1

The fact that the examples of Medieval Painting surviving in England are but a fraction of the pictorial production of this country during the period in question, is, of course, a commonplace among all students of the subject; and whenever you follow up a special line of investigation in this connexion you inevitably get a fresh and vivid illustration of this fact

  • II.— Addenda to the Iconography of St. Thomas of Canterbury

    Open Access•Tancred Borenius•ARTICLE•Archaeologia•1931

It is almost exactly two years since I had the honour of addressing this Society on the results of my investigations concerning the Iconography of St. Thomas Becket. I was conscious at the time that I had not arrived at anything like a complete survey of the existing material; and in the intervening period the material at my disposal bearing on this subject has as a matter of fact considerably increased. To a notable proportion of this new materi…

  • IV.— The Eucharistic Reed or Calamus

    Open Access•Tancred Borenius•ARTICLE•Archaeologia•1930

Although it is in the nature of things that all liturgies should be characterized by great conservatism, yet there are plenty of instances of liturgical usages which in the course of time have become obsolete or nearly so; and one of the most interesting of these is, I venture to think, that which concerns the object with which the present paper deals, namely, the Eucharistic Reed, or, as it is more frequently called, the Calamus or Fistula

  • III.— The Iconography of St. Thomas of Canterbury

    Open Access•Tancred Borenius•ARTICLE•Archaeologia•1929

The materials for a study of the iconography of St. Thomas Becket still exist in great abundance. On the canonization of the saint in 1173, his cult evidently spread all over Europe with lightning speed, and the consequences of this were very soon to be seen in all the arts. Much of the artistic production of different countries and centuries relating to the personality and life of St. Thomas has, of course, perished: and in England, after the de…
