  • Social Distancing in the Septuagint as Ancient Medical Practice and Its Implications in the Gospel of Luke and Public Health

    Open Access•Godwin A Etukumana•ARTICLE•Pharos Journal of Theology•2026

The Septuagint (LXX), as one of the ancient texts, is marked by many intriguing aspects that prompted the society of the time to adopt certain practices centred on protecting the well-being and functionality of their society. One such intrigue was the development of a medical procedure to help separate people from one another in the event of a disease outbreak. Using social historical hermeneutics as a method of interpretation, it is observed tha…

  • Violent text, violent context, and the Lukan Jesus in Luke 9

    Open Access•Godwin A Etukumana•ARTICLE•Verbum et Ecclesia•2026

This article explores the presence of violent texts and contexts in Scripture and how these dynamics can shape violent realities in society, focusing particularly on Luke’s perspective. Luke’s Gospel presents a distinct narrative tapestry, illustrated in the incident of Luke 9:51–56, where Jesus encounters a hostile and potentially violent situation. In this passage, the rhetorical response of the Lukan Jesus becomes central to the interpretation…

  • Meal in Luke 22

    Open Access•Godwin A Etukumana•ARTICLE•Stellenbosch Theological Journal•2025

The meal in the Gospel of Luke (22:19-20) and the Suffering Servant narrative in Luke 22:37 are very significant in understanding the importance of these texts to the early Jesus community. The interpretation of these texts was precious as they read and meditated on the significance of the death of Jesus to them. The death of Jesus to the early community meant to fulfil the Old Testament prophecies of the coming messiah who will bring about a new…

    Open Access•Godwin A Etukumana, Bosede G Ogedegbe•ARTICLE•HTS Teologiese Studies /…•2024

The suffering of womanhood and maltreatment are apparent when reading ancient writings. In Luke 13:10–17, it is possible to see how a number of women who suffered illnesses were treated in the hands of religious elites of the ancient world. However, the woman in Luke’s encounter with the Lukan Jesus during her illness redefined how religious leaders should deal with the suffering of womanhood. The woman was healed and treated with dignity by the …

  • Servant-Leadership as a Model for Christian Community

    Open Access•Godwin A Etukumana•ARTICLE•Religions•2024•References: 19

This article carefully examines the meaning of servant leadership as embedded in Luke 22:23-27. We believe that servant leadership as taught by the Lukan Jesus is an ideal leadership style suitable for anyone who aspires for any leadership position. To examine this topic, this article adopts subversive rhetoric to interpret the text in Luke 22:23-27 to understand the embedded ideology within the text. The application of subversive rhetoric and id…
