Winds of Change
Among scholars, policy makers, and practitioners, there is considerable interest in the dynamics associated with regions, including their emergence, decline, and regeneration. Such interest is well justified given the role that regions play in contributing to social well-being at a variety of scales—from individuals to communities and even nation-states. In this article, we examine the processes that unfolded during the regeneration of a region i…
Entrepreneurial Storytelling, Future Expectations, and the Paradox of Legitimacy
Prior research highlights storytelling as a means for entrepreneurs to establish venture legitimacy and gain stakeholder support. We extend this line of research by examining the role that projective stories play in setting expectations and the dynamics that ensue. Such attention highlights a paradox—the very expectations that are set through projective stories to gain venture legitimacy can also serve as the source of future disappointments. Bec…
Values Work
Existing cognitive and cultural perspectives on values have undertheorized the processes whereby values come to be practiced in organizations. We address this lacuna by studying the emergence and performance of what we call values practices. Drawing on an analysis of the development of an honor code within a large business school, we theorize the multiple kinds of values work involved in dealing with pockets of concern, knotting local concerns in…

Path Creation
This paper employs path creation as a lens to follow the emergence of the Danish wind turbine cluster. Supplier competencies, regulations, user preferences and a market for wind power did not pre-exist; all had to emerge in a tranformative manner involving multiple actors and artefacts. Competencies emerged through processes and mechanisms such as co-creation that implicated multiple learning processes. The process was not an orderly linear one a…
Institutional Entrepreneurship as Embedded Agency
We are delighted to introduce this special issue of Organization Studies ,t he purpose of which is to develop a deeper understanding of the concept of institutional entrepreneurship and to offer new avenues for future research. This concept has been attracting considerable attention in recent years, as was reflected in the record number of papers that were submitted - the largest number that this journal has received for any of its special issues…

Communication Patterns as Determinants of Organizational Identification in a Virtual Organization
Recent advances in information technologies provide employees the freedom to work from any place and at any time. Such temporal and spatial dispersion, however, threatens the very meaning of firms. We suggest that organizational identification may be the critical glue linking virtual workers and their organizations. We explore the role that information technologies play in the creation and maintenance of a common identity among decoupled organiza…
Institutional Entrepreneurship in the Sponsorship of Common Technological Standards
The institutional entrepreneurship implicit in a firm's sponsorship of its technology as a common standard is beset by several challenges. These challenges arise from a standard's property to enabl...
Researchers' Roles in Negotiating the Institutional Fabric of Technologies
Researchers influence the development of technologies based on their frames of reference and levels of inclusion. The authors employ these constructs to study the emergence of one technology: cochlear implants. Their description reveals the roles that researchers play in negotiating the institutional fabric of a technology
