    THE performance of the British economy under Mrs Thatcher has become the subject of vehement controversy even where purely factual matters are at issue. In his 1988 Budget speech, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Mr. Nigel Lawson maintained that the "country is now experiencing an economic miracle comparable in significance to that previously enjoyed by West Germany and still enjoyed by Japan".
