God’s Own Language: Architectural Drawing in the Twelfth Century
The Camino Imagined: Visions and Dreams across Time and Space
The inscription by UNESCO of the pilgrimage routes in France and Spain testifies to the enduring consideration for the itineraries borrowed by countless pilgrims in the Middle Ages. A physical journey implicated the network’s material composition (roads, bridges, monuments...), and brought pilgrims for their spiritual journey to the threshold of the holy at the network’s many tombs and relics. The spiritual journey, however, could also entail a d…
Lessons Learned from Community Partnership During the Covid-19 Pandemic
Underserved communities have been disproportionately affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. The Project Promoting Engagement and COVID-19 Testing for Health (PEACH) study was designed to understand the attitudes, beliefs, and infrastructure associated with COVID-19 risk, testing, and prevention behaviors in people living with, caring for, or at risk for type 2 diabetes. The purpose of this joint community-academic partnered manuscript is to share les…
Accounting for taste: American collectors and twelfth-century French sculpture
A taste for the Middle Ages had existed in the United States since at least the mid-nineteenth century, when architectural revivalism contributed to its popularity. Yet art collectors – with a few notable exceptions – showed little interest in the authentic works of the period. In the early decades of the twentieth century, however, significant sculptures of the twelfth century entered American private and public collections. A seemingly sudden e…

PERSPECTIVE 2014 -2 Marc Gil.

The Dispersed Sculpture of Parthenay and the Contributions of Nuclear Science
TWENTY-TWO limestone sculptures, thought to have once decorated the now-destroyed 12th-century church Notre-Dame-de-la-Couldre in Parthenay (Deux-Sèvres), are dispersed in numerous American and French museum collections. To assess their provenance, stylistic analysis and documentary evidence are here combined with compositional analysis of their stone by neutron activation. Comparison of the resulting compositional profiles with those of samples …
Misadventures of a Style: Romanesque art and the Druids in eighteenth‐century France
At a time when Romanesque art scarcely interested French academicians, a certain group of twelfth‐century buildings and sculptures attracted a great deal of attention from a handful of antiquarians. Uncertain of what to make of an octagonal chapel at Montmorillon, the antiquarian Bernard de Montfaucon assigned it to Gaul's pagan priests, the Druids. He developed a complex iconographic history around this chapel, and other scholars after him follo…

The Future of Publishing
The future of publishing is discussed in light of the 'third industrial revolution', now in progress, which is based upon information and the application of computers and electronics to information processing. The application of correct technologies will result in increased efficiency in both information dissemination by publishers and information retrieval by the end users. It gives me great pleasure to contribute to the twentieth anniversary is…
