Efficient Configuration of a Greenbelt: Theoretical Modelling of Greenbelt Amenity
In this paper we examine the relationships between the types of amenities generated by a greenbelt and the efficient location of a greenbelt. This analysis illuminates the research question of whether urban development beyond a greenbelt could be efficient in an economic sense. The Herbert-Stevens model of spatial efficiency is used to see what economic-efficiency conditions might justify the leapfrogging of urban development over the greenbelt. …
Nonmonocentric Urban Configurations in a Two-Dimensional Space
A one-dimensional model of nonmonocentric urban land use is extended into a two-dimensional space. Under the assumption of circular symmetry, it is shown that the equilibrium urban configurations in the two-dimensional space are essentially the same as those in the one-dimensional space except for the conditions on the parameters
Urban Spatial Structure with Open Space
Urban open spaces such as parks, open squares, parkways, etc, are considered as amenity resources or local public goods and incorporated into neoclassical urban land-use theory. Models characterizing Pareto efficient allocations and competitive equilibrium allocations with open space are presented. The 'fiscal profitability principle' suggested by Margolis is confirmed to be applicable to determine an efficient distribution of open space. Many in…
Spatial Development Processes with Renewal in a Growing City
Optimal spatial development processes with renewal in a growing city are studied by solving a long-term planning problem of urban land use in a monocentric city. Spatial development processes are classified according to the relative values of renewal cost and the relative length of the growth period of the city. Renewal processes are generally observed in the course of the spatial development processes unless renewal cost is extremely high. Since…
Location of Firms with Input Transactions
The locations of two firms with input-output linkages are studied. First, from a study of the equilibrium locations it is shown that there are generally an infinite number of equilibrium locational patterns for such a system, and it is argued that the actual equilibrium locations can only be determined by considering the dynamic process of the equilibrium. Then, the optimal locations are obtained, and compared with equilibrium locations. A mechan…
