  • The decline of child stunting in 122 countries

Open Access•Eric B Schneider, Juliana Jaramillo Echeverri et al.•ARTICLE•BMJ Global Health•2026

INTRODUCTION: Child stunting, a measure of malnutrition, is a major global health challenge affecting 148.1 million children in 2022. Global stunting rates have declined from 47.2% in 1985 to 22.3% in 2022; however, trends before the mid-1980s are unclear, including whether child stunting was previously prevalent in current high-income countries (HICs). We conducted a systematic review of child growth studies before 1990 to reconstruct historical…

    Open Access•Gregori Galofré-Vilà, Gregori Galofré‐vilà et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 9

Evidence linking past experiences of worsening health with support for radical political views has generated concerns about the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic. The influenza pandemic that began in 1918 had a devastating health impact: 4.1 million Italians contracted influenza and about 500 000 died. We tested the hypothesis that deaths from the 1918 influenza pandemic contributed to the rise of Fascism in Italy. To provide a “thicker” inte…

    Open Access•Gregori Galofré-Vilà, Gregori Galofré‐vilà•ARTICLE•Social Science History•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 31

This article measures the impact of early-life household composition on adult height and chest size in men born in Catalonia in the late nineteenth century. It combines data from military drafts with census records, observing the same individual twice over his lifetime. For family composition characteristics I control for the number of siblings, intergenesic interval, parental occupation and educational level, fatherless or motherless families, a…

    Open Access•Gregori Galofré-Vilà, Gregori Galofré‐vilà et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Economic History•2021•Cited by: 12•References: 32

We study the link between fiscal austerity and Nazi electoral success. Voting data from a thousand districts and a hundred cities for four elections between 1930 and 1933 show that areas more affected by austerity (spending cuts and tax increases) had relatively higher vote shares for the Nazi Party. We also find that the localities with relatively high austerity experienced relatively high suffering (measured by mortality rates) and these areas'…

  • Climate Effects and Stature since 1800

    Open Access•Gregori Galofré-Vilà, Gregori Galofré‐vilà et al.•ARTICLE•Social Science History•2018•Cited by: 1•References: 49

During the last 30 years, economic and social historians have collected and analyzed large amounts of anthropometric data to explore key aspects of the human past. Attention has also been devoted to the examination of factors that can exert an influence on stature. This article outlines the different ways in which climate might influence stature, either directly or indirectly. It then uses geographical information system software to explore the r…

    Gregori Galofré-Vilà, Gregori Galofré‐vilà et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Interdisciplinary…•2018•Cited by: 2•References: 10

Analysis of anthropometric evidence about conscripts born in the region of València (Mediterranean Spain) between 1850 and 1949, in conjunction with high-resolution gridded climatic data and GIS analysis, finds that modern agriculture within a warm climate was conducive not only to regional economic development but also to improvements in health, as signified by increased height. The most benefits accrued to those living in irrigated rural areas.…
