Meaningful teacher accountability through professional inquiry
Little is known about the way that teachers cope with the formalisation of professional inquiry in New Zealand. Despite its systemic implementation as an accountability-driven initiative to improve the quality of education, there are varied interpretations and enactments of professional inquiry. In this article, we will explore one teacher's interpretation of these variations. Through a narrative lens, we will illuminate personal and contextual c…
Operational trust
This paper explores the interplay of control and trust in a cross-national and cross-cultural professional development course. It examines the differing expectations of the overseas high-ranked education officials who were the students and of the course teachers, particularly in terms of: approaches to control of content and of interpersonal interactions; the cultural contexts in which the attitudes were shaped; the effect of the participants’ pr…
Neoliberalism, Violence and Student Resistance in the Higher Education Sector in Bangladesh
Neoliberalism is a common form of policy doctrine that has been incorporated into the higher education sector in Bangladesh since the 1990s. Due to this policy doctrine, Bangladesh’s higher education sector has experienced radical changes. This article argues that violence has erupted in higher education institutions following university authorities and government intervention into student resistance movements. It further argues that the campus v…
The where of doctoral research
This article explores the importance of place within doctoral research. It considers place as localised, experiential, interactional, embedded in history and discourses, and often multi-faceted and fluid. With a focus on the field of education, it argues that doctoral students need to navigate between the university, the place of study and the local context which is the field of their research, and that such navigation will enable them to explore…
Learning communities and fair trade in doctorates and development
This article reports the second stage of a study examining an academic partnership in which Bangladeshi doctoral students in a western university focus their research in the grounded context of Bangladesh and investigate the processes for change. After briefly outlining the previous published stage which examined the academic trade in higher education with developing countries, the article builds on the concept of fair academic trade to criticall…
Drama education in New Zealand
I propose a conceptualisation of drama in school education as improvisation within a framework that has a number of fixed but changing structures. I examine how the ‘drama in schooling’ practice of one country, New Zealand, might be seen as a group improvisation in which, through dramatic negotiation, participants evolve their goals, narrative and roles. Among a range of improvisational strategies, I explore how they deal with offers and blocks, …
Are schools meeting their clients' expectations? Parents voice their perceptions about children learning to read in schools today
Within a Third Space
When two cultures meet, and the interface between them grows, a new 'space' emerges. It could be one that is a 'melting pot' that homogenises the cultures, or it could be a 'third space' that co-exists with both cultures that themselves, to a lesser or greater extent, remain intact. This article describes aspects of a research project which investigated how drama and theatre were used to explore the space that is emerging through the interaction …
