Jacopo Bisagni’s Amrae Coluimb Chille
Almost all the fundamental facts about the Amrae, the most intriguing and the most difficult of early Irish texts on Columba of Iona, are disputed: its date, its authorship, whether it is a poem or prose, for what audience or readership it was intended, and even the meaning of the title. Hitherto, discussion has been hampered by the absence of a reliable critical edition, one that takes into account all the surviving copies and situates them in t…
Donnchadh Ó. Corráin. The Irish Church, Its Reform and the English Invasion
Donnchadh Ó Corráin completed The Irish Church, Its Reform and the English Invasion, as well as his magnificent three-volume guide to the written sources for early Irish history, including its literature and scholarship, Clavis Litterarum Hibernensium: Medieval Irish Books and Texts (2017), when he knew that he had only a short time to live. The Irish Church is a corrective: if history is written by the victors, ecclesiastical history is dominate…
Prehistoric Annals and Early Medieval Monasticism
To deepen our understanding of early medieval exile, the present study characterizes ways in which scholars have studied cave use in Britain and Ireland. As key figures in the history of archaeology, Sir Daniel Wilson and Sir James Young Simpson were crucial for establishing Scotland’s cave sites as subjects for study. Triggered by these two, a century and a half of research has related these places to the flowering of Gaelic monasticism. Nonethe…

Law in the western kingdoms between the fifth and the seventh century
Anyone seeking to write an account of law in the western kingdoms labours under two great difficulties. The student of Roman law can find comfort in the knowledge that his legal tradition was the creation of a political élite which prided itself upon its literary accomplishments. It was both a tool of government and one of the proudest manifestations of a literate culture. In the post- and non-Roman kingdoms, such comfortable assurance is only fo…

Early Irish and Welsh Kinship
This book studies early Irish and Welsh kinship. Kinship is a central element in all human societies. It was of particular significance in early medieval Ireland and Wales where governmental institutions were, in general, weak. This book examines the forms of kinship found in Ireland and Wales at the earliest periods for which documentation is sufficient (the 7th century for Ireland and the 12th–13th centuries for Wales). The book's analysis of k…
