  • The Culture of Catechesis and Lay Theology

    Jetze Touber•ARTICLE•Church History and Religious…•2018

In the seventeenth-century Dutch Republic, non-professional theologians articulated well-informed biblical interpretation, producing a lay theology that was unwelcome to representatives of the churches. Historians have long considered this lay theology as a manifestation of Early Enlightenment. It did not, however, necessarily result from the activities of rationalist philosophers usually associated with the Dutch Early Enlightenment, such as Ben…

  • Scriptural Authority and Biblical Criticism in the Dutch Golden Age

Henk Nellen, Dick van Miert et al.•EDITOR•BOOK•Scriptural Authority and Biblical…•2017

Did innovative textual analysis reshape the relations between Christian believers and their churches in early modern confessional states? This volume explores the hypothesis that in the long seventeenth century humanist-inspired biblical criticism contributed significantly to the decline of ecclesiastical truth claims. Historiography pictures this era as one in which the dominant position of religion and church began to show signs of erosion unde…

  • Patristic Scholarship and Religious Contention, 1678–1716

    Jetze Touber•ARTICLE•Church History and Religious…•2016

Lactantius’s treatise De mortibus persecutorum , which celebrates the end of the persecutions of Christians in the Roman empire, was lost for six centuries. Its discovery in 1678 was a European event which set the sophisticated machinery of information exchange in the republic of letters in motion. Scholars joined forces in expounding the historical significance of the patristic text. However, this collective enterprise was also bound up with the…

  • Applying the Right Measure

    Open Access•Jetze Touber•ARTICLE•The Historical Journal•2015•Cited by: 2•References: 13

The article reconstructs the seventeenth-century Dutch debate about the proper method to reconstruct the biblical temples of Jerusalem. It examines the involvement of Willem Goeree (1635–1711), an expert in architectural theory, in this debate which was dominated by philologically trained scholars. The article suggests that the clash between professional exegetes and a lay theologian like Goeree allows us to see hermeneutical debates of the early…

  • Stones of Passion

Jetze Touber•ARTICLE•Journal of the History of Ideas•2013

In Renaissance Italy, stones growing inside the kidneys, bladders and gallbladders of people with a reputation of holiness could evoke veneration. Not only did these stones test the saints’ endurance, they were also natural phenomena approaching the miraculous. Yet they never figured as juridically recognized miracles in the canonization proceedings of early modern saints. A medical historical perspective shows why internal stones fascinated cont…
