  • Questioning the NFT “Revolution” within the Art Ecosystem

    Open Access•Anne-Sophie Radermecker, Victor Ginsburgh•ARTICLE•Arts•2023

Three years after the sensational debut of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) on the art scene, it seems timely to reflect on their presumed revolutionary attributes. The speculative fascination at the beginning has gradually given way to mixed outcomes, with hardly predictable future directions. However, once recontextualized in the art ecosystem and its value chain, one may question the ability of NFT technology to lead to radical changes. Our main arg…

  • The Eurovision Song Contest: Voting rules, biases and rationality

    Open Access•Victor Ginsburgh, Juan D Moreno-Ternero•ARTICLE•Journal of Cultural Economics•2023

We analyze and evaluate the rules and results at the 2021 Eurovision Song Contest. We first concentrate on the various voting procedures and explore several alternatives (inspired by classical contributions in social choice and game theory) that could make a difference for the results. We also discuss other important issues, such as simplicity, contrast effects and whether experts are better judges than tele-voters. Our findings raise the questio…

  • Internalizing production costs and changes of tastes: More recent theatre plays feature fewer roles

Open Access•Sacit Hadi Akdede, Victor Ginsburgh et al.•ARTICLE•The Social Science Journal•2019

This paper shows that the number of roles in theatre plays has decreased over time. Playwrights seem to internalize the costs of producing plays by downsizing the number of roles. This downsizing is not a recent phenomenon: it already started a long time ago. This is not surprising, since production costs increase over time and the Baumol cost disease is obviously one of the reasons, though one cannot exclude that fashion has changed given the ti…

  • Foreign Language Learning and Trade

Open Access•Victor Ginsburgh, Jacques Melitz et al.•ARTICLE•Review of International Economics•2016

The paper is devoted to an econometric analysis of learning foreign languages in all parts of the world. Our sample covers 193 countries and 13 important languages. Four factors significantly explain learning: world population of speakers of home language, trade with speakers of foreign language, linguistic distance between home and foreign language and literacy. Trade may well deserve more emphasis than the other three factors, not only for its …

How to guarantee the respect of democratic principles in the use of languages? These two questions, especially crucial to Brussels and its surrounding area, are at the heart of the latest paper that Henry Tulkens, professor emeritus of political economy and public finances at UCL (Université catholique de Louvain), has published in Brussels Studies (“Double vision” collection).According to P…

  • Returns to Foreign Languages of Native Workers in the European Union

Most of the literature on returns to languages is concerned with immigrants. The authors' study, which uses the European Community Household Panel Survey for the period 1994–2001, infers returns to non-native languages by native workers in nine countries of the European Union. The study differs from other studies that deal with the same issue in three respects. First, instead of using a dummy for each language, they use the ratio of the populatio…

We study whether quality assessments made by wine experts and by consumers (based on prices obtained at auction between 1980 and 1992) can be explained by variables describing endowments (land characteristics, exposures of vineyards) and technologies (from grape varieties and picking, to bottled wines). However, since technological choices are likely to depend on endowments, the effects can only be identified using an instrumental variables appro…

The role of experts is dramatically increasing in our societies, where sorting information about quality is becoming more and more difficult. This paper looks at expertise in the arts (movies, novels and musical interpretation) and shows that expert opinion given shortly after the work has been produced (Oscars, prizes, rankings in musical competitions) may influence success, though it does not always recognize talent and does often not survive t…

  • Language Disenfranchisement in the European Union

    Open Access•Victor Ginsburgh, Shlomo Weber•ARTICLE•JCMS Journal of Common Market…•2005•Cited by: 5•References: 1

This article introduces the notion of language disenfranchisement which arises if the number of EU working languages is reduced and some EU citizens are denied the use of their own language for official purposes. We use data on language proficiency in the EU and show that, in spite of the widespread knowledge of English, the retention of French and German as working languages is essential to avoid a high degree of disenfranchisement of EU citizen…

  • Absentee Bidders and the Declining Price Anomaly in Wine Auctions

    Victor Ginsburgh•ARTICLE•Journal of Political Economy•1998•Cited by: 3•References: 1

The anomaly is concerned with the observation that in multiple-item auctions of identical objects, prices tend to decline over time. I show that in the case of wine auctions, which have been analyzed frequently, the anomaly is likely to be caused by the fact that most bids are entered by absentees, who use nonoptimal bidding strategies. Therefore, wine auctions can hardly be used to illustrate the standard multiple-object auction model

The purpose of this paper is to test whether public spending by local communities in Belgium is influenced by local politics. Unlike previous studies which are briefly surveyed, we test alternative models of the local budgetary decision, and systematically favour the one which includes political variables. In spite of this deliberate bias, political factors influence neither the level nor the structure of local public spending in Belgium. This ma…

  • Sharing the Income of a Museum Pass Program

Victor Ginsburgh, Israel Zang•ARTICLE•Museum Management and Curatorship•2001•References: 3

Museum passes which give visitors access to several museums, are becoming more and more frequent. One of the problems encountered is the sharing of the proceeds. We recommend a fair and easily implementable sharing rule that takes into account the relative contribution of each individual museum to the joint pass program. This rule is based on theoretical arguments drawn from the field of game theory. We also show that other commonly used rules ma…
