Challenging transitions? Assessing the occupational mobility patterns of US immigrants by gender
This article uses the New Immigrant Survey to assess the occupational mobility of US immigrants. Estimates from OLS and Heckman selection models show the occupational mobility of immigrants follows a U‐shaped pattern: immigrants arriving in the United States see their occupational status decline before it gradually improves. However, even 9 years after coming to the United States, the occupational status of immigrants remains lower than prior to …
Race in the Labor Market
Fifty years have passed since the release of the Kerner Commission’s findings, conclusions, and policy recommendations. This article first reviews recent trend and cross-section analysis on racial employment and earnings inequality before synthesizing the evidence on racial inequality’s causes and speculating how these factors might shape future African American outcomes. In conclusion, it offers a framework for addressing the nation’s persistent…
The Impact of Client Nonpayment on the Income of Contingent Workers
The authors use the Freelancers Union's annual Independent Worker Survey (IWS) from 2007 to 2011, the union's administrative membership file, and the American Community Survey to estimate the extent to which client nonpayment of independent workers is a problem and the ability of a written contract to reduce the odds of nonpayment. They develop tests for nonresponse and sample selection biases, although due to a lack of instrumental variables and…

The disparate labor market impacts of monetary policy1
Employing two widely used approaches to identify the effects of monetary policy, this paper explores the differential impact of policy on the labor market outcomes of teenagers, minorities, out-of-school youth, and less-skilled individuals. Evidence from recursive vector autoregressions and autoregressive distributed lag models that use information on the Federal Reserve's contractionary initiatives indicate that the employment–population ratio o…

Male Sub-metropolitan Black-White Wage Gaps
This study analyses trends in US male black-white earnings gaps by sub-metropolitan residence. Large suburban earnings gaps existed in 1979; however, central city gaps exhibited the largest increases during the 1980s. The increases are decomposed into changes in measurable characteristics, changes in the prices of measurable characteristics, changes in discrimination and/or unobservable skills, and changes in white earnings inequality. Changes in…
The Persistence of Gender Earnings Inequality in Taiwan, 1978-1992
During the 1980s, Taiwan's industry and export mixes shifted toward higher-skill, technology-intensive products, and lower-skill, labor-intensive industries began moving abroad. Despite improvements in women's skills and educational attainment relative to men's, the mean gender earnings ratio between 1978 and 1992 remained at 65%. The authors analyze household survey data from Taiwan's Manpower Utilization Survey to examine why rapid structural c…
