  • Predicting higher child BMI z-score and obesity incidence in Malaysia

Open Access•Ruth Salway, Miranda Elaine Glynis Armstrong et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2024

Having a higher BMI z-score at baseline was a stronger predictor of a higher BMI z-score at follow-up than any parental or sociodemographic factor. Targeting prevention efforts based on parent or sociodemographic factors is unwarranted but early childhood remains a key period for universal obesity prevention

  • An Exploratory Model of Family Resilience Processes and Functioning

Open Access•Ryan Yumin Chua, Amudha Kadirvelu et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Cross-Cultural…•2021

Given the challenges experienced by the Semai indigenous communities in Perak, Malaysia, and their distinct cultural beliefs, it is important to understand the role of the social and cultural networks in their resilience processes. In particular, further attention needs to be paid to how their families function and shape their beliefs about their lives, as there might be key mechanisms and processes that differ from existing general conceptualiza…

The current review outlines types of protective factors for the indigenous communities in Southeast Asia focusing on the cultural, family …

  • Cohorts and community

Open Access•Pascale Allotey, Daniel D Reidpath et al.•ARTICLE•Global Health Action•2014

BACKGROUND: Community engagement is an increasingly important requirement of public health research and plays an important role in the informed consent and recruitment process. However, there is very little guidance about how it should be done, the indicators for assessing effectiveness of the community engagement process and the impact it has on recruitment, retention, and ultimately on the quality of the data collected as part of longitudinal c…

  • The rural bite in population pyramids

Open Access•Nowrozy Kamar Jahan, Pascale Allotey et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2014

The health services needs of an older population will tend towards chronic conditions, rather than the typically acute conditions of childhood. The relatively greater number of older people in the rural population suggest a very different health services mix need. Community based population monitoring provides critical information to inform health systems

  • Contextualizing chronicity

    Open Access•Shajahan Yasin, Carina K Y Chan et al.•ARTICLE•Globalization and Health•2012

The increasing prevalence of chronic Non Communicable Disease (NCD) around the world is well documented and projections suggest a frightening increase in prevalence around the world. The majority of new patients with chronic disease are expected to occur in developing countries

  • Community-based blood pressure measurement by non-health workers using electronic devices

Open Access•Daniel D Reidpath, MeiLee Ling et al.•ARTICLE•Global Health Action•2012

INTRODUCTION: Population monitoring and screening of blood pressure is an important part of any population health strategy. Qualified health workers are expensive and often unavailable for screening. Non-health workers with electronic blood pressure monitors are increasingly used in community-based research. This approach is unvalidated. In a poor, urban community we compared blood pressure measurements taken by non-health workers using electroni…
