  • Mayakovsky on the Land

    Ludmila Shleyfer Lavine•ARTICLE•East European Jewish Affairs•2021•References: 3

It is surprising that Vladimir Mayakovsky, the poet whose self-proclaimed mission was to give city streets a language, turned to publicizing farming collectives. No less noteworthy is the fact that this poet of internationalism worked on the ethnocentric project of promoting Jewish agrarian communities in Crimea. This article addresses Mayakovsky’s collaboration on the film Evrei na zemle (Jews on the Land, 1927), and his poems “Evrei (Tovarishch…

  • Vladimir Mayakovsky's Agit‐Semitism

    Open Access•Ludmila Shleyfer Lavine•ARTICLE•The Russian Review•2019•Cited by: 2

Images of Jewishness as ethnic, cultural, and biblical categories in Vladimir Mayakovsky's works are both plentiful and understudied. The present article attempts to bridge this gap while exploring the mechanisms that guide the poet's responses to anti‐Semitism. I begin by focusing on the function of the Exodus story in Stikhi ob Amerike (Verses about America), and then move to Mayakovsky's “agitational” works: his collaboration on the film Evrei…

  • Pushkin Pushing Production

Ludmila Shleyfer Lavine•ARTICLE•The Slavic and East European…•2018

This article examines the function of Pushkin’s “Сказка о царе Салтане” [The Fairy Tale about Tsar Saltan] in Mayakovsky’s two extended ads (reklam-poemy), one co-authored with Sergei Tret'iakov and another with Nikolai Aseev. I analyze thesubtext of Pushkin’s fairy tale within the pre-Revolutionary marketing practice of engaging national identity. At the same time, the Soviet poets subvert the status of magic in fairy tales, otherwise central to…

  • Poema of Lieutenant Schmidt's End

    Open Access•Ludmila Shleyfer Lavine•ARTICLE•The Russian Review•2011

Boris Pasternak’s poemy are acutely self-conscious of their place in the epic tradition. Lieutenant Schmidt (LS) represents one attempt at exploring the parameters of the poema itself as the poet makes a “difficult” transition from “lyric thinking” to “the epic.” In this article I examine this transition against a contemporaneous example in the genre, Tsvetaeva’s Poema of the End (PE). In LS, structural elements of the poema are counterposed to t…
