    Open Access•Francisco J Medina‐albaladejo, Francisco J Medina-Albaladejo•ARTICLE•Revista de Historia Económica /…•2026

The nutrition transition model examines the impact of industrialization and economic development on standards of living through dietary changes. The changes in dietary structure over the last two centuries have been determined. These changes consist of an overall increase in calorie and protein intake and a shift from a diet of predominantly cereals to one with animal-based products. The literature considers that the growth in income is the princ…

The living standards of the working classes during industrialization continue to be the subject of debate in European historiography. However, other factors closely related to the institutional setting, such as the role played by social economy and the institutions for collective action, are seldom considered. This study focuses on these factors, and attempts to quantify the social impact of consumer cooperatives. We argue that these institutions…

  • Unequal access to food during the nutritional transition

    Open Access•Francisco J Medina‐albaladejo, Salvador Giner et al.•ARTICLE•The Economic History Review•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 38

Unequal access to food is one of the main issues in nutritional history, but scarcity of sources has hampered the quantification of this phenomenon. This study uses hospital diets to address this gap. It uses records from between 1852 and 1923 concerning hospital diets in the psychiatric section of the Hospital General de Valencia (Spain), from which it is possible to infer the actual intake of nutrients for six groups of patients and members of …

  • Between leader-worship and member’s democracy

    Open Access•Tito Menzani, Francisco J Medina‐albaladejo•ARTICLE•Historia y Política Ideas…•2018•References: 1

We analyse the impact of the Italian fascist regime on the consumer co-operative movement. This is of great interest because of the clash between an anti-democratic political culture and a democratic economic culture. We intend to demonstrate that the fascist regime penalized the consumer co-operative movement in various ways. However, a small number of organizations were an exception to this state of events, and paradoxically succeeded, from an …

  • Co-operative Wineries in Italy and Spain in the Second Half of the Twentieth Century

    Open Access•Francisco J Medina‐albaladejo, Tito Menzani•ARTICLE•Enterprise & Society•2016•Cited by: 4•References: 9

The evolution of the co-operative wine sector in traditional wine-producing countries in southern Europe, such as France, Italy, Spain, and Portugal, presents similar historical features in the first half of the twentieth century. However, the analysis of their current state shows that Spanish co-operatives are smaller in size than their French and Italian counterparts. Additionally, the analysis shows that Italian (and French) co-operatives have…

  • Co-operative wineries

    Francisco J Medina‐albaladejo•ARTICLE•Business History•2015•Cited by: 4•References: 34

Part of economic theory has regarded co-operative firms as useful tools for dealing with market failures during periods of economic contraction, but also as suffering severe efficiency problems during periods of growth. The main aim of this article is to test this hypothesis in the case of Spanish co-operative wineries during the years of late Francoism. In order to do this, the balance sheets of 75 co-operative firms from the 1970s have been sub…

  • External competitiveness of Spanish canned fruit and vegetable businesses during the second half of the twentieth century

    Francisco J Medina‐albaladejo, Francisco J Medina Albaladejo•ARTICLE•Business History•2010•Cited by: 1•References: 15

The Spanish canned fruit and vegetable industry has had a strong export orientation since its beginnings at the end of the nineteenth century. A growing foreign demand, the constraints of the domestic market and the need to find outlets for large quantities of fruit and vegetables resulting from the modernisation of farming were behind this intense move towards an international focus. In this paper we seek to show what constituted the bases of th…
