On Howls and Pitches” and the Rural Voice
The Rose Main Reading Room of the New York Public Library is always quiet. It stands as a shrine to a particular kind of silence. Only the sounds of scholars’ devotions hallow this sanctuary: the low litany of typing and page-turning, the scuff of wooden armchairs across the floor, the footfall of guards in watchful procession along the aisles. The photocopier is strategically placed at the rear of this grand room; it was there that I first encou…
The Voice of the Rural: Music, Poetry, and Masculinity among Migrant Moroccan Men in Umbria
A moving portrait of the contemporary experiences of migrant Moroccan men. Umbria is known to most Americans for its picturesque rolling hills and medieval villages, but to the many migrant Moroccan men who travel there, Umbria is better known for the tobacco fields, construction sites, small industries, and the outdoor weekly markets where they work. Marginalized and far from their homes, these men turn to Moroccan traditions of music and poetry…
Voice of the Rural: Music, Poetry, and Masculinity among Migrant Moroccan Men in Umbria
The Akazehe of Burundi: Polyphonic Interlocking Greetings and the Female Ceremonial. By Serena Facci. Translated by Alessandra Ciucci
Akazehe is one of the names in Burundi for forms of sung greeting performed exclusively by women. Studies carried out during the colonial era (in particular Rodegem 1965, 1973) and in more recent times (Ndimurwanko 1985-6) have shown how the contents of these greetings among women are closely linked to the feminine world in which these greetings are used—in specific private and public spaces in accordance with rural tradition. Although these gree…
Performingl-ḥrig: Music, sound and undocumented migration across the contemporary Mediterranean (Morocco-Italy)
Based on ethnographic research that is part of a larger project on the role of music and sound among migrant Moroccan men in Italy, this article focuses on 'L-ḥərraga', a song that narrates the voyage and the experience of undocumented migration that ends with the tragic death of a young Moroccan man crossing the Mediterranean. Through 'L-ḥərraga', a song which belongs to ʿabidat rma - a musico-poetic genre whose 'rough' sound is particularly mea…
Sonic ethnography: Identity, heritage and creative research practice in Basilicata, southern Italy
Sonic ethnography explores the role of sound-making and listening practices in the formation of local identities in the southern Italian region of Basilicata. The book uses a combination of text, photography and sound recording to investigate soundful cultural performances such as tree rituals, carnivals, pilgrimages, events promoting cultural heritage and more informal musical performances. Its approach demonstrates how in the acoustic domain tr…
Performing ‘L-ʿalwa’: A sacred and erotic journey in Morocco
‘L-ʿalwa’, a sung poem whose text recounts the pilgrimage to a saint’s shrine in Morocco, is celebrated for its ability to convey images and emotions stirred up by the sacred journey. As part of the repertory of ʿaiṭa—a genre of sung poetry from the Moroccan plains and plateaus traditionally performed by professional female singer-dancers [shikhat] and nowadays categorised as popular music [shʿabi]—‘L-ʿalwa’ presents an interesting case study thr…

The Study of Women and Music in Morocco
The 1987 publication of Women and Music in Cross-Cultural Perspectives , the first anthology on the topic of women and music in the field of ethnomusicology, marked a critical turn in the scholarship. The ethnographic-focused essays on women's genres and roles in music in diverse societies around the world, including the Middle East, presented new analytical frameworks and research on authority, gender and access, and notions of power and perform…
Embodying the Countryside in ʿAiṭa Ḥaṣbawiya (Morocco)
As we left Safi and began driving along a stretch of country road on our way to Rabat, one of my female traveling companions asked me if I had a cassette of 'aiṭa on me. "Why?" I replied with a certain curiosity. "Oh ...," she continued, "I just feel like listening to it. I want to smell the soil (bghit nshdm t-trab), taste the countryside (bghit nduq l-ərubiya). "I was struck by her answer, by how she had articulated the desire to listen to this…
The Text Must Remain the Same: History, Collective Memory, and Sung Poetry in Morocco
The article explores why a particular group of Moroccan musicians conceives of different performances of a sung poem titled "Kharbusha" as unchanging despite variables arising from the dynamics of performance practices. To this end, I explore the seeming discrepancy between discourses about "Kharbusha" and its performance, and what this discrepancy may tell us about why these performers-and by extension the audiences who hire them and whose expec…
