  • Search With Learning for Differentiated Products

Babur De Los Santos, Ali Hortaçsu et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Business and Economic…•2017

This article provides a method to estimate search costs in a differentiated product environment in which consumers are uncertain about the utility distribution. Consumers learn about the utility distribution by Bayesian updating their Dirichlet process prior beliefs. The model provides expressions for bounds on the search costs that can rationalize observed search and purchasing behavior. Using individual-specific data on web browsing and purchas…

  • The Ongoing Evolution of US Retail

Open Access•Ali Hortaçsu, Alı Hortaçsu et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Economic…•2015•Citada por: 2•Referências: 18

The past 15-20 years have seen substantial and visible changes in the way US retail business is conducted. Explanations about what is happening in the retail sector have been dominated by two powerful and not fully consistent narratives: a prediction that retail sales will migrate online and physical retail will be virtually extinguished, and a prediction that future shoppers will almost all be heading to giant physical stores like warehouse club…

  • Mechanism Choice and Strategic Bidding in Divisible Good Auctions

Ali Hortaçsu, Alı Hortaçsu et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Political Economy•2010•Citada por: 5•Referências: 6

We propose an estimation method to bound bidders' marginal valuations in discriminatory auctions using individual bid-level data and apply the method to data from the Turkish Treasury auction market. Using estimated bounds on marginal values, we compute an upper bound on the inefficiency of realized allocations as well as bounds on how much additional revenue could have been realized in a counterfactual uniform price or Vickrey auction. We conclu…

  • E‐Commerce and the Market Structure of Retail Industries

    Open Access•Maris Goldmanis, Ali Hortaçsu et al.•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2010•Citada por: 9•Referências: 21

This article examines the effect of the advent and diffusion of e-commerce on supply-side industry structure. We specify a general industry model involving consumers with differing search costs buying products from heterogeneous producers. We interpret e-commerce as a reduction in consumers' search costs. We show how it reallocates market shares from high-cost to low-cost producers. We test the model using US data for three industries: travel age…

  • Cementing Relationships

Ali Hortaçsu, Alı Hortaçsu et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Political Economy•2007•Citada por: 8•Referências: 3

This paper empirically investigates the possible market power effects of vertical integration proposed in the theoretical literature on vertical foreclosure. It uses a rich data set of cement and ready-mixed concrete plants that spans several decades to perform a detailed case study. There is little evidence that foreclosure is quantitatively important in these industries. Instead, prices fall, quantities rise, and entry rates remain unchanged wh…

  • Are Structural Estimates of Auction Models Reasonable? Evidence from Experimental Data

Patrick Bajari, Ali Hortaçsu et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Political Economy•2005•Citada por: 5

Recently, economists have developed methods for structural estimation of auction models. Many researchers object to these methods because they find the rationality assumptions used in these models to be implausible. In this paper, we explore whether structural auction models can generate reasonable estimates of bidders’ private information. Using bid data from auction experiments, we estimate four alternative structural models of bidding in first…
