The Immaterial Turn in Medieval Latin Theories of Sensation
According to a venerable historical narrative, a crucial step in the development of the modern picture of the mind occurred when Descartes argued that sensing occurs in the immaterial human mind, together with thought and volition. The mind, the story goes, had once been the home only of rational thought and volition, with sensations being embodied phenomena, much like digestion, growth, or weaving. However, I show in this article that the view t…
An Ethnolinguistic Repertoire for the Kingdom
This research proposes a sociolinguistic function for the inclusion of Aramaic in Paul’s letter to the Galatians 4:6, noted by the word, abba . It suggests that this word is a purposeful demonstration of covenantal identity construction by Paul to his Galatian followers. This research follows other recent studies which suggest an eschatological Israelite identity for believers in the Christ-believing messianic communities of the Diaspora. The let…
Aristotle’s “De anima” at the Faculties of Arts (13th–14th Centuries)
Paul Within Ioudaismos
This study analyzes the term ioudaismos in Second Temple literature and proposes differentiation in how this term was used in Palestine and the Diaspora, with the latter being characterized by the following: (1) seize the land; (2) persecute barbarians; (3) retain the temple; (4) liberate Jerusalem; (5) reestablish Torah. In the Diaspora, ioudaismos was modified to refer to: (1) persecuting pagans; (2) concern for the Temple; and (3) observing an…
The mark of the mental in the fourteenth century
This paper presents an original interpretation of the fourteenth-century debate over whether every volitio is a cognitio. This debate, I argue, was at its heart a debate about what constitutes the mark of occurrent mental states. Three participants in this debate – Adam Wodeham, Richard FitzRalph, and John of Ripa – articulated three distinct accounts of the mark of the mental. In doing so, they also developed several philosophical accounts of th…
Nomos and the Dispute in Galatians 2
This research explores the interpretation of nomos in Galatians 2:11-21 within the light of Greco-Roman associations and Palestinian chavurot. As such, it proposes a reading of the text and conflict as a localized issue of conflicting association by-laws between Jews and Gentiles. The members of Jacob's association in Jerusalem demonstrated Pharisaic behavior in requiring circumcision for membership in the association and requiring the additional…
The Beatific Vision and the Metaphysics of Conscious Experience in John of Ripa
Does human happiness consist in God, as the widespread medieval view that God is the last end of human beings would suggest, or does it consist in the experience of God, the view suggested by medieval readings of Aristotle? In response to this theological problem, the important fourteenth-century philosopher John of Ripa developed one of the most innovative and subtle late medieval theories of the metaphysics of awareness. This article provides a…
Polylanguaging and bivalency in the Ecuadorian linguistic landscape
This study analyzes the linguistic landscape (LL) of Azogues, Ecuador, by analyzing 171 photographs of business signs, taken during the summer of 2017. It analyzes cases of language mixing from a polylanguaging perspective ( Jørgensen et al. 2011 ) and applies the concept of bivalency ( Woolard 1999 ) to understand how linguistic features are used on signs in the LL to index membership in multiple groups and to construct multiple identities throu…
English in Ecuador
This study analyses the use of English in the linguistic landscape (LL) of Azogues, Ecuador. A representative sample of fixed signs in the economic centre of the city was photographed by the author in the summer of 2017, consisting of 171 photographed signs. This study analyses what linguistic features are used and how other semiotic resources accompany them. The use of English, in either bilingual signs or in monolingual English signs, is fairly…
