  • Deposits Stratigraphy of Marmot Cave in Northwestern Altai

    Open Access•V A Uliyanov, V A Ulyanov et al.•ARTICLE•Problems of Archaeology…•2025

The article presents the results of a lithological and stratigraphic investigation of deposits in Marmot Cave, a new multilayered archaeological site in northwestern Altai, in the Anui River valley. The thickness of the deposits exposed in the cave mouth zone is 3 m. A profile of the northwestern wall of the pit was used as the stratotype section, where we identified five main stratigraphic units. Layer 1 formed during the Holocene, primarily due…

  • Features of Cryptoclimate and Condensation of Atmospheric Moisture in the South Chamber of Denisova Cave

    Open Access•V A Uliyanov, V A Ulyanov et al.•ARTICLE•Problems of Archaeology…•2025

For the first time in Denisova Cave, we conducted combined observations on the condensation of atmospheric moisture, temperature, humidity, and air circulation inside the karst cavity, which served as a refuge for ancient people during about 300,000 years. Observations confirmed the previously stated conclusions about the stabilizing effect of the rock massif on the course of air temperatures and revealed a sharp differentiation of temperature an…

  • Features of the Morphology and Karst Formation Processes of the Marmot Cave in the Anui River Valley

    Open Access•A S Derevnina, V A Uliyanov et al.•ARTICLE•Problems of Archaeology…•2025

In 2025, archaeological investigations were conducted at Marmot Cave in the Anui River basin. This paper presents new analytical on the cave’s interior and describes the cave speleology. Particular attention is paid to observations of speleothems as key paleogeographic markers in reconstructing cave evolution and changes in external environmental factors. The 108-meter-long cave is subdivided into two principal zones – the Main Zone and the Deep …
