Executive Functions and Reading in Children
This systematic review and meta-analysis examined the associations between executive functions (EFs) and reading in elementary school children. Framed by the unity and diversity model of EF and the direct and indirect effects model of reading, this review aimed to clarify how EFs (inhibition, shifting, and updating) uniquely contribute to reading development (word reading, listening comprehension, reading fluency, and reading comprehension). The …
Reframing ‘vulnerability’ to digital harms
As governments worldwide move to restrict young people's access to social media, public debate has centred on the potential harms of digital engagement and the need to shield adolescents from risky or harmful content. This article focuses on how Australian adolescent boys and young men (ABYM) understand online risks and position themselves as responsible digital citizens. Drawing from 20 interviews and 7 focus groups (N = 47) with Australian ABYM…

Anxiety related distractibility deficits
Smartphones can increase productivity and ease accessing information, however the possible negative implications for high smartphone use or problematic smartphone use (PSU) are not fully understood. The current study examined anxiety-linked memory and attention deficits to determine whether PSU moderates these relationships.Cross-sectional data from 506 young adults aged 18-29 years (68% female) were analysed in separate regression models to inves…

Examining the Association between Sports Participation and Mental Health of Adolescents
Sports participation has been linked to various health outcomes; however, there is scant literature exploring this relationship in developing countries. We used a mixed method approach to examine the association between sports participation and mental health of Bangladeshi adolescents ( n = 320; 13-17 years; 59% boys) and to explore sports preferences and barriers to sports participation across genders. A survey collected team and non-team sports…

Interrelationships between trait anxiety, situational stress and mental effort predict phonological processing efficiency, but not effectiveness
Attentional control theory (ACT) describes the mechanisms associated with the relationship between anxiety and cognitive performance. We investigated the relationship between cognitive trait anxiety, situational stress and mental effort on phonological performance using a simple (forward-) and complex (backward-) word span task. Ninety undergraduate students participated in the study. Predictor variables were cognitive trait anxiety, indexed usin…
Cognitive trait anxiety, situational stress, and mental effort predict shifting efficiency
Attentional control theory (ACT) predicts that trait anxiety and situational stress interact to impair performance on tasks that involve attentional shifting. The theory suggests that anxious individuals recruit additional effort to prevent shortfalls in performance effectiveness (accuracy), with deficits becoming evident in processing efficiency (the relationship between accuracy and time taken to perform the task). These assumptions, however, h…

Increasing utilization of a rural cervical cancer detection program
The Alabama Department of Public Health established, in 1973, a Cancer Screening Program (CSP). Although 66,000 women have been screened, many rural females had never used the program. After a community health organization education effort was introduced into a target rural county, an examination of CSP new user data for two intervention quarters revealed 345 and 150 per cent increases, respectively, in the pattern of use
Some Aspects of the Conflicts of Religion in China during the Six Dynasties and T'ang Periods
In the whole history of religious controversy in China there never was a period when the Chinese phrase I kuo san hung; wu shui shih ts'ung1: "One state, three leaders; whom should I follow ?" was more applicable than that which succeeded the introduction of Buddhism in the first century of our era. To understand the conditions of the period in question it is necessary to review briefly the situation before Buddhism arrived. Europeans have long b…
