Rough Music: Le Charivari anglais

Plebeians and Proletarians in 18th-Century Britain
EIGHTEEN YEARS AGO, students from the Centre for the Study of Social History at the University of Warwick set the historical establishment on its heels with a brilliant book of essays on the criminal law and criminality in Hanoverian England. Pursuing the poacher, the wrecker, and the smuggler through the archives, they recovered forms of community-sanctioned action that addressed the important distinction between the law and the unwritten popula…
Romantisme, moralisme et utopisme: Le cas de William Morris
E.P. Thompson, Romanticism, Utopianism, and Moralism : the Case of William Morris Morris's independent derivation of communism out of the logic of the Romantic tradition may be assimilated to Marxism only in the course of a process of re-ordering within Marxism itself. 'Civilization' and 'barbarism' were terms which Morris always employed with ironic inversion, drawing in part upon the inheritance from Carlyle and Ruskin and in part upon the very…

Rough Music Reconsidered
IN 1988 I had the honour to be invited to deliver the Katharine Briggs Memorial Lecture to the Folklore Society. It was with some trepidation that I selected a theme to which Katharine Briggs made her own contribution and which has long interested members of this Society, from whose work I have learned a good deal. The present paper corresponds largely, though not entirely, to the lecture given on that occasion (a tape of which is in the Society'…

The Ends of Cold War
While I sympathize with Fred Halliday’s intentions in his article on ‘The Ends of Cold War’, I must disagree sharply both with its method and execution. No doubt he has been trapped by the pressure to make instant commentary (his lecture on the events of October to December

The Moral Economy of the English Crowd in the Eighteenth Century
This article examines the behaviour of the English crowd in the eighteenth century, arguing that it was not irrational or simply motivated by self-interest, but rather guided by a "moral economy." This moral economy was based on traditional notions of fairness and justice, particularly in relation to the supply and price of food. Thompson argues that the crowd's actions, such as food riots and protests against enclosure, were a form of direct act…

The Rule of Law: An Unqualified Human Good
In his brilliant book, The Making of the English Working Class, E.P. Thompson, the author of one of these volumes and a contributor to the other, underlined "the paradox" in 18th-century England of "a bloody penal code" existing "alongside a liberal ... administration and interpretation of the laws."This paradox raised a problem for Marxist historians like Thompson: While they portrayed the 18thcentury English legal system as an instrument of cla…

English Hunger and Industrial Disorders: A Study of Social Conflict during the First Decade of George III's Reign
This dissertation deals with the provincial hunger riots and the metropolitan industrial riots of the first decade of George Ill's reign.By focussing both on the immediate causes of these disturbances and on the underlying social tensions which determined their form and direction, it seeks to explain why this was the worst period of disorder in the century, although in other decades the deprivations of the poor were greater.Early studies of the r…
Romanticism, Utopianism and Moralism: The Case of William Morris
Over the past two decades, my study of William Morris has come to be recognized as a ‘quarry’ of information, although in one or two instances it appears that it was a suspect quarry, to be worked surreptitiously for doctoral advancement. One ought not to object to this
