Hierarchical gene diversity and genetic structure of tribal populations of Andhra Pradesh, India
Gene diversity and genetic structure of tribal populations of Andhra Pradesh, India, have been analyzed under a hierarchical model consisting of five regions of the state, tribes within the regions, and local subpopulations within the tribes. Average gene diversity has been estimated from gene frequency data for 15 polymorphic loci by using nested gene diversity analysis of G ST . The intralocation coefficient of gene diversity was estimated at 9…
Selection intensities and consanguineity in the Yadava and Vadabalija of Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, India
The opportunity for intensity of selection is studied in two backward caste groups with different occupations, namely Yadava (pastoral) and Vadabalija (fishing) of Bheemunipatnam Taluk of Visakhapatnam District, Andhra Pradesh. The amount of selection intensity is found to be higher in Vadabalija (0.8583) than Yadava (0.5827). The contribution of mortality to the total index of selection is greater in Vadabalija (0.6095) than in Yadava (0.3326). …
Role of Marital Migration in the Expression of Inbreeding Load in Different Castes of Andhra Pradesh
Role of maritial migration in influencing inbreeding local has been examined. A positive interaction between marital distance and inbreeding load has been observed. The Scheduled Caste groups (Madiga, Mala) with low marital migration showed low inbreeding load or absence of it, whereas the forward caste groups (Reddy, Vysya) with high marital migration exhibted high inbreeding load this may possibly be due to the introduction of new genes from di…
Genetic structure of three Naikpod subpopulations of Andhra Pradesh, India
The genetic structure of three subpopulations of the Naikpod tribe of Andhra Pradesh, India, was examined by studying three blood group, six red cell enzyme, and five protein systems and phenylthiocarbamide taste sensitivity. The gene frequency data of 15 loci are compared among the subpopulations as well as with those reported for other population groups from India. The analysis of gene diversity revealed that the gene differentiation among the …
Quantitative estimation of serum proteins in newborn and their mothers
The present study investigates the effects of factors such as birthweight, gestation and infants' sex on serum protein levels of newborn and their mothers. The mean concentration of serum proteins in newborn and their mothers was found to be similar. The levels of albumin were high with a corresponding decrease in the levels of globulins in infants which may be related to placental transfer of these molecules. A study of the relationship between …
Selection intensities and inbreeding among some caste groups of Andhra Pradesh, India
An attempt is made to study the interaction of inbreeding levels with other factors in influencing the intensity of natural selection. Results suggest that selection intensity values are high in the inbred and low socioeconomic groups of Madiga and Mala (1.545, 0.687). On the other hand, the non‐inbred and high socioeconomic group of Maheshwari shows low selection intensity (0.543). Contribution of mortality to total index of selection is greater…
Factors influencing hypohaptoglobinaemia in newborn in India
An attempt is made to enumerate the effects of some factors on hypohaptoglobinaemia in a sample of 389 infants (along with their mothers) who were classified electrophoretically for haptoglobins (Hp). 85 . 5% of infants were Hp 0-0. There was no direct effect of birth-weight on the frequency of Hp 0-0 but there was a significant interaction between maternal haptoglobin type and birth-weight of newborn, showing an excess of 2-2 among mothers of lo…
Selection intensities among the tribal populations of Adilabad district, Andhra Pradesh, India
Selection intensity, as indicated by total pre‐reproductive mortality and fertility (Crow, 1958), was computed among three Indian tribal populations living in similar geographical environments—the Kolams, Raj Gonds, and Pardhans of Adilabad District, Andhra Pradesh. The Pardhans showed the greatest selection intensity, (1.1811) followed by the Kolams (0.8564) and Raj Gonds (0.7240). Pre‐reproductive mortality and infertility contributed equally t…
Inheritance studies of c-t and a-d intertriradial distances on the palm by means of twin pair analysis
Variation and inheritance of relative length of index finger in man
The length of index finger relative to fourth finger has been measured on parents and children in 190 families belonging to an endogamous Reddy community of Nalgonda District, India. The distribution of relative index finger length among various family groups was unimodal and symmetric. Heritability estimates based on parent-offspring regressions indicate a moderate level (40--70 percent) of additive genetic variance. There was no evidence for th…
Frequency of colour-blindness in Hyderabad school children
A study of 2623 school children of Hyderabad City on the incidence of colour vision defects revealed 3·2% red-green defective boys. No conclusive evidence could be found to confirm preferential association between colour-blind persons.
