Global Profiles of Positive Youth Development
Age and gender differences in the value development of Dutch adults in 11 years of longitudinal data
Value change is social focused in mid-adulthood. • Universalism increases in relative importance throughout the life-span. • Few cohort differences; GDP and unemployment effect value ratings and preferences. • Large gender differences in relative importance of values formed before age 25. • Men and women change values at similar rates leading to convergence in ranking. Stereotype accommodation concerning older people
From a cultural learning perspective, immigrants can integrate novel stereotypes learned in host countries into pre‐existing stereotypes. Research has not previously addressed this possibility in relation to stereotypes specifically about older people. This cross‐sectional study examines whether cultural differences concerning stereotypes about older people, duration of stay in the host culture and cultural orientation affect stereotype accommoda…
Value systems as motivational forces for the suppression of ageism towards older people amongst young adults
What explains ageism towards older people? Several answers exist in the literature, but it is still unclear whether the ageism people express has been altered by motivational forces ( i.e. factors which carry or enact motivation, leading to action or thought) or whether an original, primal ageism can be expressed directly. Investigating populations of young adults (45 and younger), this article suggests that value systems are sources of internal …
Ethnic Stereotype Formation and Its Impact on Sojourner Adaptation
Ethnic stereotypes are cognitive markers that are formed and modified because of intercultural contact with a new cultural group. There is now much empirical evidence that explicates how stereotypes of ethnic groups can impact individuals' acculturation experiences. However, what is unknown is how previously nonexistent ethnic beliefs are formed as a result of contact with the local culture. One hundred and seventy-four ( N = 174) overseas Chines…
Evidence for stereotype accommodation as an expression of immigrants’ socio-cognitive adaptation
Stereotype Accommodation
Cognitive heuristics, or people's stereotypes, are central to human interaction. Yet, the literature has been concerned with inter-ethnic stereotypes held by migrants and therefore has insufficiently addressed what might happen to individuals' cognitive heuristics in the process of acculturating to host cultures. The authors discuss this gap in the literature by drawing on the culture learning perspective and work on cultural adaptation to examin…
