Herding at the Edges: Climate Change and Animal Restlessness in the Peruvian Andes

Andean herders and their animals coproduce hierarchical, cooperative, and antagonistic forms of social interaction, mediated through human-animal communication. The breakdown of communicative practice alerts herders to broader socioecological changes under persistent drought conditions. I illustrate this dynamic by …
Living with Chronic Impairment: Tracing Care Using Changes in the Skeleton
Impairment to the skeleton provides tangible traces that bioarchaeologists can study to understand disease and disability in the past. However, conceptions of disease and disability are more difficult to assess in bioarchaeological contexts. Here, we use the bioarchaeology of care approach to both understand disease and assess the presence of care in a Chilean woman with facial disfigurement from the Solcor 3 cemetery in northern Chile. Changes i…
Who Would Watch the Animals: Gendered Knowledge and Expert Performance Among Andean Pastoralists
In recent decades, global and regional pastoralist development initiatives have articulated their project goals within the broader objective of climate change adaptation. Development programs in the high Andes have sought to diminish pastoralist vulnerability to the impacts of shifting seasonal weather patterns and glacial retreat. Despite the increase in attention to the gendered distribution of climate change risks and strategies globally, wome…
