  • Large-scale text analysis using generative language models: A case study in discovering public value expressions in AI patents

Open Access•Sergio Pelaez, Gaurav Verma et al.•ARTICLE•Quantitative Science Studies•2024

We put forward a novel approach using a generative language model (GPT-4) to produce labels and rationales for large-scale text analysis. The approach is used to discover public value expressions in patents. Using text (5.4 million sentences) for 154,934 US AI patent documents from the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), we design a semi-automated, human-supervised framework for identifying and labeling public value expressions in …

Paulo Fonseca, Bruno Ribeiro et al.•ARTICLE•Science as Culture•2022•Cited by: 5•References: 18

As supporters of Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, the Bolsonarism movement has promoted the drug chloroquine for treating Covid-19 in Brazil, despite it being mostly rejected by mainstream health institutions as an effective treatment. This situation can be investigated through the lens of Science and Technology Studies (STS) and ignorance studies supported by methods from digital sociology. Bolsonarist discourse does not contest scientific au…

  • Exploring the normative turn in regional innovation policy: Responsibility and the quest for public value

Open Access•Elvira Uyarra, Bruno Ribeiro et al.•ARTICLE•European Planning Studies•2019

The perceived ineffectiveness of traditional innovation policies in solving societal challenges such as poverty, ageing, climate change as well as problems of regional economic restructuring has motivated a recent ‘normative turn’ in innovation policy. This has shifted the debate on the rationales for intervention from market and system failures to accommodate more transformative views but also other approaches rooted in the notion of public valu…

  • Introducing the dilemma of societal alignment for inclusive and responsible research and innovation

Open Access•Bruno Ribeiro, Lusiana Bengtsson et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Responsible Innovation•2018

In this discussion paper, we outline and reflect on some of the key challenges that influence the development and uptake of more inclusive and responsible forms of research and innovation. Taking these challenges together, we invoke Collingridge's famous dilemma of social control of technology to introduce a complementary dilemma that of "societal alignment" in the governance of science, technology and innovation. Considerations of social alignme…

  • Integrated assessment of emerging science and technologies as creating learning processes among assessment communities

    Open Access•Ellen-Marie Forsberg, Ellen‐Marie Forsberg et al.•ARTICLE•Life Sciences Society and Policy•2016•References: 31

Emerging science and technologies are often characterised by complexity, uncertainty and controversy. Regulation and governance of such scientific and technological developments needs to build on knowledge and evidence that reflect this complicated situation. This insight is sometimes formulated as a call for integrated assessment of emerging science and technologies, and such a call is analysed in this article. The article addresses two overall …
