  • Making the slow metropolis by designing walkability

Aniss Mezoued, Quentin Letesson et al.•ARTICLE•Urban Research & Practice•2022

Focusing on the mobility aspects of big cities and metropolises, the paper starts with the assessment that the Slow City is linked, in terms of mobility, to slowing down traffic. This paper proposes the following working hypothesis: if the Slow City concept is relevant for making our bigger cities sustainable, it needs, in terms of mobility, to be adapted to the slowest mode of transportation: walking. To that extent, our research develops atool …

  • Urbanism

Quentin Letesson, Carl Knappett•CHAPTER•Minoan Architecture and Urbanism•2017

Agglomerations of buildings, whether just a handful in a loose settlement, or a whole town with elaborate urban infrastructures (street system, drainage, open spaces, and other ‘public works’) constitute the meso-scale, the level of the community. Remarks on the variable quality of our data sets (see chapter 2) clearly apply to what we know of the meso-scale. Unfortunately, additional parameters also limit our understanding of Minoan agglomeratio…

  • Minoan Architecture and Urbanism

Quentin Letesson, Carl Knappett•EDITOR•BOOK•Minoan Architecture and Urbanism•2017

Minoan Crete is rightly famous for its idiosyncratic architecture, as well as its palaces and towns such as Knossos, Malia, Gournia, and Palaikastro. Indeed, these are often described as the first urban settlements of Bronze Age Europe. However, we still know relatively little about the dynamics of these early urban centres. How did they work? What role did the palaces have in their towns, and the towns in their landscapes? It might seem that wit…

  • Maison du Mage' Project

Quentin Letesson, Simon Jusseret•ARTICLE•Journal of Contemporary Archaeology•2017

This article presents our encounter with the Maison du Mage, an abandoned house in the village of Marsal (Lorraine, France). While highlighting the particular history of the building and the constitution of its complex assemblages, the paper first and foremost aims to address the methodological challenges raised by the shifting nature of this contemporary ruin. It presents the results of our preliminary forays within the house and discusses the d…

  • Minoan Halls

    Quentin Letesson•ARTICLE•American Journal of Archaeology•2013•Cited by: 3•References: 6

The tripartite room labeled a Minoan hall is probably the most emblematic architectural feature of the Neopalatial period in Bronze Age Crete (1700/1675–1470/1460 B.C.E.). Although this spatial arrangement stands out as an exceptional accomplishment because of its elaborate layout, fine materials, and innovative properties, its function is still somewhat enigmatic. In fact, some of its very characteristics, such as flexibility and layout complexi…

  • Towards an Archaeology of Perception

    Quentin Letesson, Klaas Vansteenhuyse•ARTICLE•Journal of Mediterranean…•2007•Cited by: 3•References: 9

Architecture is perhaps one of the most important elements in the archaeology of Bronze Age Crete. It is employed as the archaeologist’s lens through which this society, its members and its social structures are viewed. While there are certain general laws concerning architecture and its relation to society, an approach is advocated here in which the visual perception of the ancient user is considered to be the key to the interpretation of the ar…

THE MALIA DAYS The Malia Days, organized by the Ecole française d'Athènes on November 2 and 3, 2007, focused on the organisation of space and the exploitation of resources, themes that allowed uniting the approaches of current work on two different scales, those of agglomeration and urbanism, on the one hand, and of the territorial organisation, on the other. All the contributions are concerned with ongoing research, of recent or forthcoming publ…
