As a national observatory and think tank on museums and heritage, the Office for Museum Cooperation and Information (OCIM) has for forty years conducted national, territorial and thematic surveys on the development of museums, heritage, and scientific, technical and industrial culture (PCSTI). It is dedicated to understanding how institutional and professional practices evolve and what are the new and emerging trends in the field, and to supporti…
Introduction.
From connoisseur to the good manager. Perspectives in managerial curatorship from Canada and Brazil
Managerial curatorship developed mainly, though not exclusively, as a practice and museum model in so‐called society museums during the 1990s, particularly in French‐speaking Canada and later in parts of French‐speaking Europe. It was progressively adopted in other cultural and heritage organizations in Latin America and more recently in the UK and USA. This model involves professional project managers taking on certain curatorial tasks such as e…
Curating Action
Dance involves a set of movements that embody social memory. Such forms of intangible heritage have presented emerging challenges for curatorship. This paper draws from the experience of the Musées de la civilisation (Quebec City, Canada) to address ideas of collecting and curating in the performing arts. By presenting the travelling exhibition Rebel Bodies, an international collaborative project that highlights contemporary dance and movement as…
Spatial Configuration in Tiwanaku Art
This article highlights the scenic potential of Tiwanaku stone carved iconography (South-Central Andes, ca. AD 600-1000). It argues that aspects of Tiwanaku carved imagery may be approached as potential scenes of ritual action. The paper develops by taking into account the spatial configuration of the imagery that surrounds a specific set of anthropomorphs referred to as Staff Gods. An examination of Staff God imagery reveals how some elements in…
