Energieflüsse und Embargos
Sanctions have proven to be unsuccessful means of stopping global energy flow. In the 20th century, this also applied to the cross-border trade in Soviet fossil fuels that were in great demand on the world market. During the Cold War, Western embargoes served little purpose, because the West Europeans had a far greater interest in importing raw materials and expanding trade relations with the socialist “Eastern bloc” than the Americans. Sociological analysis of Montenegrin teachers' digital capital
Starting with the concept of digital capital in social sciences, this article presents the key findings of the "Global Kids Online" nationally representative survey of primary and high school teachers' digital skills and practices that was conducted in Montenegro with Unicef's support in 2018. Digital capital, as any other form of capital within Bourdieu's perspective, has a sociological validity only in correlation with other forms of capital - …
Russian Foreign Policy and Identity
More than ever, investigating questions of “identity” seems to offer explanations for political dynamics worldwide. The rise of far-right populist movements in Eastern and Western Europe, and the e
From Conquest to Deportation
Musa Kundukhov and the Tragedy of Mass Emigration
This chapter deals with the tragedy of the mass expulsion of the North Caucasian indigenous population in the aftermath of Russian conquest in the mid-1860s. While the causes of the forced emigration of vast numbers of Cherkessians to the Ottoman Empire have been investigated, little research has been conducted regarding the simultaneous emigration of other Muslim communities, including thousands of Chechens. In the migrations of Muslim Ossetians…
Manifestations of Nationalism
When Mikhail Gorbachev introduced his policy of reforms, he was not prepared for the rise of nationalism and ethnic conflict that would grip the Soviet Union at the end of the 1980s. As a native of
Media Literacy in Montenegro
Few countries in the world have introduced media education into their curriculums. Montenegro became one of them in 2009, when “media literacy” was introduced as an optional subject for 16 and 17 year old students of Gymnasium high schools. This article presents the findings of the first and only research conducted so far on media education in Montenegro. It is a national case study which examines the potential of media education to change the sc…
Highland Rebels
This article investigates one of the most tragic episodes of Soviet history: the collectivization campaign of 1929–30, when the Soviet state’s brutal assault on the peasantry plunged the whole country into chaos and provoked large scale rebellions. Resistance was especially fierce in the Muslim dominated parts of the North Caucasus, a notoriously troubled region where Soviet structures were still very weak, and the social cohesion of mountain com…
The Tito-Stalin Split
This article reassesses the Tito-Stalin split of 1948 based on findings from former East-bloc archives. In particular, it shows that the version propagated in the official Yugoslav historiography, suggesting that the break with Moscow arose because of Yugoslavia's distinct path toward socialism, is incorrect. Instead, Josip Broz Tito's unwillingness to give up on his territorial and political ambitions in the Balkans, especially Albania, despite …
Regionalisation trends in Russia
Regionalisation in Russia is to be understood as part of the overall transformation process. It is argued that while the form of regionalisation during the Yeltsin era after 1991 presented an image of democratic legitimacy, it was still largely based on the same structures and characteristics as the ‘regionalism’ that took shape during the Soviet era. In this context, the real significance of Putin's federal reforms is to be seen in the fact that…
