  • Children and young people’s unaccompanied mobility: The role of the built and social environments in an unequal Latin American Metropolis

    Natan Waintrub, Peter R Jones et al.•ARTICLE•Children s Geographies•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 16

Unaccompanied trips are highly beneficial for children, yet their practice is difficult in unequal Latin American metropoles. This article investigates how the built and social environments influence children and young people’s trips in Santiago de Chile. It does so by reporting the findings of a stated preference questionnaire in which children and young people were invited to choose the preferred environment to walk unaccompanied in between pai…

  • Devaluation and Marx's Law of the tendential fall in the rate of profit

Peter R Jones, Peter Jones•ARTICLE•Review of Political Economy•2016•Cited by: 1

Marx's law of the tendential fall in the rate of profit predicts that the rate of profit will decline over the long term as the forces of production develop, and move cyclically in a way that explains crises and economic recoveries. This interpretation is substantiated with textual evidence, and with a method for measuring the dynamic of devaluation and revaluation which Marx uses to explain the profit rate cycle. This method is shown to be consi…

  • Short‐term Changes in Adult Arrest Rates Influence Later Short‐term Changes in Serious Male Delinquency Prevalence: A Time‐dependent Relationship

    Open Access•Robert B Taylor, Ralph B Taylor et al.•ARTICLE•Criminology•2009•Cited by: 1•References: 64

The impacts of quarterly adult arrest rates on later male serious delinquency prevalence rates were investigated in Philadelphia police districts (N = 23) over several years using all male delinquents aged 10–15 years who were mandated to more than “straight” probation. An ecological deterrence model expects more arrests to lead to less delinquency later. A community justice or mass incarceration model, the ecological version of general strain th…

  • Developing an empirically based typology of attitudes of entering students toward participation in learning communities

Peter R Jones, Jodi Levine Laufgraben et al.•ARTICLE•Assessment & Evaluation in Higher…•2006

Learning communities (LC) seek to strengthen and enrich students’ connections to each other, their teachers, and the subject matter they are studying. Their success depends on the nature of the learning community program, the learning styles of the students who participate and the reasons why students entered the program. This study uses a combination of factor and cluster analysis to develop a typology of student experiences that is used to exam…

  • Using Groups in Criminal Justice Courses: Some New Twists on a Traditional Pedagogical Tool

    Peter R Jones•ARTICLE•Journal of Criminal Justice…•2006

This article describes and discusses the utilization of small‐group techniques within higher education criminal justice courses. The literature on collaborative and peer learning is reviewed and the author’s own experience with the integration of group‐focused techniques into the classroom is discussed. It is argued that the use of small‐group methods using peer assessment of individual student contributions avoids many of the traditional problem…

    Open Access•George F Rengert, Alex R Piquero et al.•ARTICLE•Criminology•1999•Cited by: 48•References: 14

The “journey to crime,” or the study of the distance between an offender's residence and offense site, has been a subject of study within criminology for many years. Implications arising from such research touches the majority of criminological theories. An overriding conclusion from this line of research is that most crimes occur in relatively close proximity to the home of the offender. Termed the distance‐decay function, a plot of the number o…

  • Judicial Guidelines for Pretrial Release: Research and Policy Developments in the United States

    Open Access•Peter R Jones, John S Goldkamp•ARTICLE•The Howard Journal of Criminal…•1991

Despite the many differences in the criminal justice systems of Britain and the United States, both countries face common problems in the field of pretrial decision‐making. The bail decision is a difficult, possibly high‐risk, decision that occurs in a very short period of time with little reliable information. Bail information schemes recently tested in Britain suggest that policy‐makers recognise the need to classify cases on something other th…

I was very much interested in the article which appeared in your publication of April '83, (Vol.2, No. 4) "Quebec's Unaccompanied Minors Programs", by Mr. John Forrester. He describes very well the living realities of young refugees: their adaptation and those of their sponsor families; but allow me to speak to you about the application of this programme as it exists today for the organization A.M. I.E. (Aide Médicale Internationale à l'Enfance).…

    Peter R Jones•ARTICLE•World Archaeology•1980•Cited by: 154•References: 11

The author gives an interim account of his own experiments in butchering carcasses, including goat and zebra, using stone tools which he had made himself (replicating certain tool types common in Bed IV of Olduvai Gorge). The butchery process was based on the traditional Wakamba method of butchering goats, which is also described step by step. The author found that for most tasks bifacial tools of substantial size, including handaxes, were more e…
