    The initiation of and commitment to deviance involves an interaction between the characteristics of the individuals, their experiences, and a number of situational conditions.     Simon and Gagnon have drawn attention to the importance of linking patterns of homosexual behavior to nondeviant behavior or roles. A complementary perspective is suggested wherein the choice of sexual object is influenced by structural factors, as appears to be the case in the total institutional setting.
