  • Ptolemy’s Chorographia in the New World: Revelations from the Relaciones Geográficas de la Nueva España of 1579–1581

    Open Access•John F Moffitt•ARTICLE•Art History•1998•Cited by: 3

The art‐historical issue raised here concerns some forgotten formal sources for a distinctive cartographic format once commonly informing European map‐making, and the specific proposition examined here in some detail is ‘chorographic’ description. Our immediate point of departure are those maps called pinturas which accompanied the Relaciones Geográficas de la Nueva España (Mexico) of 1579–81. Modern students of the history of cartography recogni…

  • An Exemplary Humanist Hybrid: Vasari's "Fraude" with Reference to Bronzino's "Sphinx

    Open Access•John F Moffitt•ARTICLE•Renaissance Quarterly•1996•References: 10

In an article recently published in this journal, I argued that a certain, often discussed, hybrid encountered in Bronzino's wellknown painting depicting The Exposure of Luxury (ca. 1545, National Gallery, London; also known as Venus, Cupid, Folly, and Time) was actually intended to represent a “sphinx” [fig. 1]. Whatever its proper designation, this is the bizarre figure that may be espied lurking in darkness (as much metaphorical as physical), …

  • "A Hidden Sphinx by Agnolo Bronzino, "ex tabula Cebetis Thebani

    Open Access•John F Moffitt•ARTICLE•Renaissance Quarterly•1993•Cited by: 1•References: 1

In 1568 Giorgio Vasari Described (from already dim memories) a now-famous allegorical painting that had been painted by Bronzino (Agnolo Allori) for Cosimo I de’ Medici. I). According to Vasari's recollection Bronzino had “made a picture of singular beauty” that was sent to the king of France, François I. As best as Vasari could recall, the particulars of its complicated iconographic program were all devoted to variations on an erotic theme inasm…

  • Art and Politics: "An Underlying Pictorial - Political Topos in Courbet's "Real Allegory

    John F Moffitt•ARTICLE•Artibus et Historiae•1987

Gustave Courbet subtitled the massive painting (1855) depicting his Studio a real allegory. In practice, this puzzling conjunction of disparate terminology signifies an assemblage of symbolic figures in contemporary dress arranged into a moralized (left vs. right) compositional scheme; the entire ensemble is expressed, however, in a vigorously naturalistic painterly language. Although print-sources have been identified for major canvases by Courb…

  • An Historical Basis for Interpreting Styles of Late 18th- to Late 20th-Century Pictorial Artworks

    John F Moffitt•ARTICLE•Leonardo•1979

The author proposes a system of visual art analysis for application to pictorial artworks of the 19th and 20th century. The principles that have been commonly used to define the Archaic, Classical, Baroque and Mannerist styles of the West are reduced to outlines for quick reference, with entries for sense of form in terms of proposed principles and for presentation of content in terms of proposed philosophical conceptions. The outlines are consid…
