  • Sedimentological characteristics of four palaeolakes in the Tsakhiurtyn Hundi Lakeland (Gobi Desert, Mongolia)

    Open Access•R Sikora, Mirosław Masojć et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2026•References: 59

We describe the sedimentological properties of four palaeolake basins located in the Tsakhiurtyn Hundi Lakeland, situated at the southern edge of the Arts Bogd massif in the Gobi Desert, Mongolia. The palaeolakes – Talingaryn Shal, Chavgantsyn Shal, Zuun Khuree, and Luulityn Toirom – are part of the endorheic Shereegiin Gashuun Basin. In this study, we reconstruct the local palaeogeographic and palaeoclimatic conditions from the Pleistocene to th…

  • The earliest Holocene wanderers through the Gobi Desert evidenced by the radiocarbon chronology of the lakeshore settlement near the Tsakhiurtyn Hondi, Mongolia

Open Access•Przemysław Bobrowski, Maciej Jórdeczka et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 2

We report a set of radiocarbon dating of prehistoric settlements located on the paleolake Baruun Khuree shores in the Gobi-Altai area, southern Mongolia. The obtained series of 11 AMS 14 C measurements on charcoal and other charred plant macro-remains can be associated with one of the earliest episodes of the Holocene highly mobile desert-adapted hunter-gatherers activities from the Gobi desert (ca. 11,250–10,500 cal BP). Exploiting a wide range …

  • Technological and Stylistic-Typological Analyses of the Coca Bags From the Yauca Valley in Southern Peru

    Open Access•Jakub Wanot, Józef Szykulski•ARTICLE•Chungara•2024

The paper discusses the results of technological and stylistic analyses of coca bags (chuspas; a term derived from the Quechua word ch'uspa, the Aymara equivalent is wallqipu) -richly decorated and elaborately woven textile pouches -from the San Francisco cemetery in the Yauca valley (Caravel province). The research results revealed the applied weaving techniques of single S/Zspun yarns and S(2z) yarns including warp-faced plain weave, complex war…

  • Rock Painting Within Southern Peru in the Context of Physicochemical Analysis of Pigments

Open Access•Józef Szykulski, Beata Miazga et al.•ARTICLE•Rock Art Research•2024•References: 6

The article pertains to rock paintings recorded during studies conducted in 2017 and 2019 by an international archaeological expedition at numerous sheltered sites in the Río Atico basin and Vilavilani region in the Río Caplina catchment area within southern Peru. During the research, archaeological sites with rock art were registered, the state of preservation of the paintings was documented, and it was determined what factors were causing their…

  • Palaeolakes, caves and settlement during the Pleistocene and Holocene around Tsakhiurtyn Hundi, Mongolia

Open Access•Mirosław Masojć, Gunchinsuren Byambaa et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 3

The authors present results from a new research project focusing on the prehistory of the area surrounding a vast flint outcrop in Mongolia, called Tsakhiurtyn Hundi, in the borderland between the Gobi-Altai Mountains and Gobi Desert. They present the discovery of a cave and the results of its exploration, confirming its use by Pleistocene hunter-gatherers

  • The Tiwanaku Tradition within the Tambo Valley, Southern Coast of Peru

    Open Access•Józef Szykulski, Jakub Wanot•ARTICLE•Latin American Antiquity•2021•Cited by: 4•References: 18

The collapse of the Tiwanaku state around AD 1000 resulted in dramatic changes in the areas of its former colonies such as the Moquegua Valley, which featured the largest Tiwanaku communities outside the Altiplano. The inhabitants of these former colonies were forced to relocate to the areas north of Moquegua, including the Tambo River estuary (Arequipa Department, Province of Islay). This relocation has been confirmed at La Pampilla 1, where a l…
