Towards a phenomenology of Samnite fortified centres
The Sangro Valley Project was established in 1994 by John Lloyd, Neil Christie and Amalia Faustoferri. Until the recent resumption of British fieldwork in the Fezzan, knowledge about the Garamantes was largely based on the interim reports of the extensive fieldwork carried out there by Charles Daniels between 1958 and 1977. The aim of this paper is to present a new approach to the study of Roman ceramics. Specifically, to address the way in which ceramics are used in demographic reconstruction, and to suggest that the current emphasis on formal economic explanations is leading to reconstructions of both the economy as a whole and individual settlement patterns which are erroneous.
