Association between male absence and women’s reproductive autonomy in sub-Saharan Africa
Reproductive decision-making within partnered relationships in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) is often shaped by patriarchal gender norms, with male partners commonly exerting substantial influence over family planning and contraception. These dynamics may shift when male partners migrate and are not physically present in the household. This study investigates the association between male absence and women’s reproductive autonomy in SSA, using national…

Associations between water insecurity and reproductive health outcomes among adolescent girls and young women in Sub-Saharan Africa
Adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) face heightened risks of adverse sexual and reproductive health outcomes. Water insecurity may contribute to these vulnerabilities by creating social and environmental stressors that undermine reproductive health and rights, yet this relationship remains understudied. This study examined associations between water insecurity and reproductive health outcomes among AGYW in 29 SSA c…

In Australia, just as most other settings, existing programs focusing on sexual and reproductive health of young people largely occur within formal school and clinical settings, thereby limiting accessibility to young people experiencing social vulnerabilities such as homelessness. This sub-population are often targeted through the specialist homelessness services (SHS) in Australia. However, growing evidence shows that youth service staff often …
“The Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Community Is Not Just Minoritised But Ignored”
BACKGROUND: People from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds who are living in high-income countries, are disproportionately impacted by blood-borne viruses and sexually transmissible infections (BBVs/STIs). Despite this, many do not engage with available preventive and treatment services due to a range of patient, provider and systems level barriers that make patient engagement challenging. This study explores ways to make he…
Prevalence and determinants of HIV testing among adolescent girls and young women in 28 sub-Saharan African countries
HIV and AIDS remain a major global public health issue with the largest burden in sub-Saharan African (SSA) countries. Adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) in the sub-Saharan African region experience intersecting vulnerabilities that may increase their exposure to HIV, while also constraining their engagement with treatment and care. HIV testing is crucial in the AIDS response for both prevention and treatment. Therefore, understanding HIV te…
Understanding Hepatitis B Knowledge, Attitudes, and Stigma in the Korean Community in Australia
People Like Us Would Have No Clue If the Information Is Online
Socio-cultural and behavioural factors are often not adequately considered in designing health promotion programs for culturally and linguistically diverse communities in Australia. Given that people of Vietnamese background are disproportionately impacted by hepatitis B, the aim of this research was to better understand these factors to inform hepatitis B health promotion messages for the Vietnamese community. Twenty participants (four living wi…
If I use pad, I feel comfortable and safe”
In-school adolescent girls in Abuja, Nigeria, have good menstruation-related knowledge and positive attitudes, as well as practise menstrual hygiene management. Students' class and age at first menstruation were major factors associated with good knowledge of menstruation and menstrual hygiene management; respondents' class, religion and parents' educational qualification were associated with a positive attitude, while respondents' religion and p…
Understanding stigma and attitudes towards hepatitis B among university students in Australia of Chinese and Vietnamese background
This research provides insights that could inform culturally sensitive health promotion programs to address negative attitudes towards hepatitis B among the broader Chinese and Vietnamese communities living in Australia
I am not really into the government telling me what I need to eat”
The results of this study indicate that strategies to improve access to healthy foods are required to improve healthy dietary practices among the study population. Such strategies could help address this group's structural and individual barriers to healthy dietary practices. In addition, developing a culturally responsive eating guide could also enhance the acceptability and utilisation of such resources among communities with ethnic diversity i…
Compared to Covid, HIV Is Nothing”
Background : While a large body of evidence indicates changes in alcohol and other drug use among young people as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, there is a lack of evidence around changes in sexual practices and how the pandemic may be impacting the potential spread of blood-borne viruses and sexually transmissible infections (BBVs/STIs). Most of what we know about sex during COVID-19 lockdowns is largely based on solitary sexual practices, w…
"It was protected, except, it wasn’t [with] a condom"
Based on the results of this study, tailored sexual health interventions for international students; which incorporate strategies for modifying perceived sexual norms in Australia, are advocated. In addition, this study recommends sexual health interventions that promote dual protection of condoms for both contraception and BBVs/STIs
How perceived Australian sexual norms shape sexual practices of East Asian and sub-Saharan African international students in Sydney
Findings provide evidence to support a need for contextualized and effective sexual health services for international students that take account of perceptions around sexual norms and how they can be modified to ensure that sexual practices which these students may engage in, will be managed in a safe and responsible manner
Protective sexual behaviours among young adults in Nigeria
This study found that a majority of adolescents and young adults in Nigerian Universities engage in protective sexual behaviours. Adequate family support and living with both parents are positively associated with protective sexual behaviours. The study however revealed that about one-fifth of our participants engaged in high-risk sexual behaviour. This suggests a need for behavioural change interventions, provision of sexual health services and …
