Reading Swift: Papers from The Sixth Münster Symposium on Jonathan Swift
Assembling thirty-five lectures delivered at the Sixth Münster Symposium on Jonathan Swift in June 2011, this new volume of Reading Swift testifies to an extraordinary spectrum of research interests in the Dean of St Patrick’s, Dublin, and his works. As in the successful earlier volumes, the essays have been grouped in eight sections: biographical aspects (W. B. Carnochan, John Irwin Fischer, Clive T. The Sad Story of Burton, Speke, and the Nile; or, Was John Hanning Speke a Cad: Looking at the Evidence
This is a study of the famous controversy between Richard Burton and John Hanning Speke, fellow explorers who quarreled over Speke's claim to have discovered the source of the Nile during their African expedition in 1857-59. All we learn is that they and other graduate courses lead to the Doctor's degree, but the specific requireme…
Swift's Tale: On Satire, Negation, and the Uses of Irony
SWIFT TEASES US into thought. His satires, self-referential as they are, turn the mind inward on itself and, also, to the inner life of satire. Gulliver, the Modest Proposal, the Tale, all are deep allegorical versions of their own surface structures. It is the Tale that I am going to talk about here-and about some of its satiric effects that seem to me exemplary of the satiric case. Everyone agrees that satire resists definition, and the reason …
