Editing and genre conflict: How newspaper journalists clarify and neutralize press release copy
Although corporate press releases are ‘preformulated’ to fit some of the conventions of journalistic reports, their style at times seems quite different from the one favoured by journalists. That is, there appear to exist stylistic conflicts between the press release genre and the press report genre. This study investigates the nature of these conflicts by means of a corpus analysis of the reworking strategies employed by journalists that actuall…
The Perceived Convincingness Model: Why and under what conditions processing fluency and emotions are valid indicators of a message’s perceived convincingness
Persuasive messages aim to influence people’s behavior. Arguments in these messages typically refer to the positive consequences of the advocated behavior or the negative consequences of failing to do so. It has been claimed that people automatically generate a judgment about the message’s convincingness. We present the Perceived Convincingness Model (PCM) to explain how people generate this judgment based upon the fluency with which they process…
Cloze testing for comprehension assessment: The HyTeC-cloze
Although there are many methods available for assessing text comprehension, the cloze test is not widely acknowledged as one of them. Critiques on cloze testing center on its supposedly limited ability to measure comprehension beyond the sentence. However, these critiques do not hold for all types of cloze tests; the particular configuration of a cloze determines its validity. We review various cloze configurations and discuss their strengths and…

A short assessment of health literacy (Sahl) in the Netherlands
The results provide positive evidence for the reliability and validity of the SAHL-D. The SAHL-D can be applied to analyze the role of health literacy in health and healthcare, and for the development and evaluation of targeted interventions

How grammatical and discourse factors may predict the forward prominence of referents: Two corpus studies
One of the ways in which discourse coheres is by means of repeated reference to entities. Theoretical accounts of referential coherence propose heuristics for the interpretation of referential expressions, which are especially important when there is more than one potential antecedent. One of the most explicit accounts is provided by Centering Theory (Grosz et al., Computational Linguistics 21: 203–225, 1995). Using features such as grammatical s…
Scaling causal relations and connectives in terms of speaker involvement
This article presents a scalar approach to the semantics and distribution of causal connectives in Dutch and French. The proposed scale is called the speaker-involvement scale, and is defined in terms of the degree of implicit involvement of the speaker in the construction of the causal relation. First, a number of causal coherence relations identified in the literature are reanalyzed in terms of increasing speaker involvement, yielding the follo…
Subjectivity in causal connectives: An empirical study of language in use
The linguistic categories apparent in people’s everyday language use provide us with interesting insights into the working of the mind. In this article we study the way in which Dutch speakers categorize causally related events by expressing them with the connectives dus ‘so’ or daarom ‘that’s why’. These two connectives both express volitional and epistemic causal coherence relations. Their overlapping contexts of use raise the question of why t…

The differential linguistic realization of comparative and additive coherence relations
It is commonly assumed that comparative coherence relations (e.g., Peter is tall but his brother is short) can be analyzed in terms of semantic contrast. In this article it is claimed that comparative relations need to be understood in a context containing a similarity assumption. This assumption may be con®rmed (positive polarity) or denied (negative polarity) by the comparative text passage. When two entities are characterized in terms of a com…
Classifying negative coherence relations on the basis of linguistic evidence
Discourse Analysis and Evaluation: Functional approaches
Functional approaches to the study of language may not only be used to characterize discourse structures, but also to assess their communicative quality. In fact, discourse analysis and evaluation are conceptually related activities. In this volume the link between analysis and evaluation is explored in seven studies discussing a variety of discourse genres like package inserts, telephone openings, survey interviews, meetings, government brochure…
